2018 Ass Kickers - sean.bonner - 03-14-2018

Over two months in!

What 2018 releases have been in yer rotation so far?

I'll get the ball rolling here.

Bahamas - Earthtones

Just when I think I have a fav Bahamas record, he puts out a new one and it becomes my favourite.

Titus Andronicus - A Productive Cough

I know this group has been around a while, however this is the first record I've heard from them, at it's a doozie. They remind me of The Hold Steady, only grittier. Can't wait to listen to the back catalogue.

David Byrne - American Utopia

I'm beginning to think that this David Byrne guy is pretty good at writing songs.

MGMT - Little Dark Age

Love all the releases from this band. Pre-release reviews said that it was a 'return to form' with lots of pop influenced tunes a la 'Oracular Spectacular'. I totally disagree. This album does kick ass though.

Most of the new albums I'm looking forward to haven't been released yet, so I've only bought 2 so far. But they're both excellent. The Buffalo Tom record is arguably the best thing they've done since their 90s heydey.

Margaret Glaspy is someone to pay attention to. There are few better at writing songs about being in (and ending) shitty relationships. Her latest:

That MGMT album brings me mixed emotions. It's clearly their best since the debut record, but it's brought out a full collective of MGMT apologists trying to convince anyone who will listen that Congratulations was a genius record and not one of the worst albums of the last decade.

But, for the most part, I've mostly been consuming singles, waiting for the records to drop. Janelle Monae put out a tune called "Make Me Feel" which has Prince's fingertips all over it, and the new Courtney Barnett song "Nameless, Faceless" is wonderful. I'm also really keen to hear the new Leon Bridges album.

Pretty sure you're already familiar with the Heartless Bastards? Their front woman Erika Wennerstrom has a new solo album out on March 23rd. The first two singles are fantastic:

Also, I haven't listened to all of it yet, but from what I've heard of the new Brandi Carlile album 'By the Way, I Forgive You' it's another great 2018 album.

This performance of them playing Emmylou in front of Emmylou Harris is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

2018 already out:



Straight up excellent indie rock. Probably appealing to Hip fans. Sample: Addictions



Smart, dark, and danceable. Sample: Mad As Hell



Atmospheric indie rock. Sample: Black Willow



(Django Django - Marble Skies)

Quirky British electronic rock. Sample: In Your Beat



Indie pop rock with some throwback elements. Sample: Tea-Soaked Letter



Super weird but very fun pop/electronic sample-based pastiche stuff. Think Avalanches with only one vocalist. Sample: Something For Your M.I.N.D.



Fun, inspirational electronic music. Highly recommended live show, to boot. Sample: Release



Great folksy/rootsy/country rock. No sample because he only made it available for a couple days before taking it offline.



Crunchy rock from members of Frightened Rabbit and Editors. Sample: Notes On A Life Not Quite Lived



Blending synths and traditional instruments in interesting ways. Sample: The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs

Upcoming:



(Damien Jurado - The Horizon Just Laughed)

A return to more folksy songs after recent detours into psychedelic rock. Sample: Over Rainbows and Rainier



(Okkervil River - In The Rainbow Rain)

An allegedly fun rock album from a typically dark and cerebral indie rock band. Sample: Pulled Up The Ribbon



I had mixed feelings about her previous album but this new one sounds great. Sample: Nameless, Faceless

More great atmospheric folk rock. Sample: Richard



Pretty diverse confessional indie rock with some electronic elements. Sample: 12 Steps



Fun lo-fi indie rock. Sample: The Bus Song



Excellent rootsy rock. Sample: Silver



Pretty devastating indie rock. Sample: Your Best American Girl



Low-tempo electronic stuff with great vocals. Sample: Heaven I Know
