my vote would either go to the white album (beatles) or physical graffiti..zeppelin...both have such strange, brilliant tracks on them..like

white album: happiness is a warm gun, blackbird, sexy sadie, yer blues, glass onion.....

I've had this discussion with a friend before. My personal favorite double album would be Pink Floyd - The Wall, but I certainly can't argue with your choices. Another fav of mine is Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness.

I wish more bands would release double albums.

ahh.yes..the wall..love it, especially if i feel like bringing myself down!! a classic..and i'd forgotten about the pumpkins cd(shame on me)..think i'll throw that in now...the thing i love about double discs, is the "obscure" tracks that normally wouldn't make an album..for me on the s.p. disc, it's lily!!! love that track!!

how about houses of the holy, bron-yr-aur, trampled underfoot and in my time of dying, from physical graffiti, 4 great tunes. Wow was that ever a great album. bron-yr-aur is probably the best display of acoustic guitar playing i've ever heard. and on a sidenote one of the coolest covers i've ever seen, i have the cd case that looks like the vinyl case and i love how you can remove the insert to reveal different pictures thgrough the windows.

There's no question the albums mentioned so far are classics, but personally I'm gonna have to go with something a little more recent: Being There by Wilco. Easily one of the most brilliant records I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Nine Inch Nails-The Fragile (a masterpiece, this album never gets the props it deserves)

Metallica-Garage Inc. (quite possibly the last worthwhile studio offering they'll ever offer up)

Cypress Hill-Skull & Bones (think about it: most rap artists have a hard time putting together one album of decent material, The Hill put out a rock solid double LP, possibly the best release of their career, a modern day hip-hop classic)

Ozzy-Live And Loud

Black Sabbath-Reunion (i dunno about everyone else, but hearing the original masters of reality play their first show in so many years in front of a sould-out hometown crowd makes my spine tingle, not to mention the 2nd disc has their two first studio recordings since the 70's on it too)

Pink Floyd-Pulse

Pink Floyd-Ummagumma (some of the strangest songs ever recorded are on this album, the live disc is killer too)

I totally agree with the Led Zep choice for number 1, as for others, not really studio double albums, but I like Neil Young's "Decade" double disc and Oasis' double live "Familiar to Millions" and Mellencamps "Words & Music" all really good too.

Agreed. First of all, Jimmy's engineering / production is incredible - given that Bron-yr-aur was recorded in the sixties , it sounds absolutely terrific. The resonation of that jumbo Martin he recorded that on is marvelous. Secondly, the composition itself is so brilliant that it dumbfounds the common hack like myself. Page often uses non-standard tunings, and this song is no exception - it’s in the DADGAD tuning he loves to use, (I think). When a friend (and cousin) played it for me recently, I was moved nearly to tears - not because I was so awed by his rendition (which seemed flawless), but because of how beautifully seamless the composition is in itself. The progression is simple and logical - somber, yet somehow strangely uplifting at the same time.

“Genius” is the word.....

Physical Graffiti is a masterpiece. Many of those songs were unreleased from ealrlier albums. I've found a lot of zep shows on torrent sites and the 1975 shows from LA and NYC feature a lot of physical songs...the height of their prowess!

Live albums and compilations don't count...only original tunes. The wall is a close second in my opinion.
