I'd assume writing / time off / other projects.

The band's approach to their ongoing relationship with their fans is increasingly disappointing. Especially at a time when social media is such a great enabler for stuff like this. Too bad.

Talk about disappointing.
I saw/heard some of the live recordings of last Summer's tour, particularly the show in Newfoundland. I hope Gord was just really drunk or on drugs because it was horrible. Absolutely horrible.

Where to go from here!
This board used to be such a bubble to fluff the hip

I don't think they're done, but they might as well be considering the state of things recently. So far the only band member we've heard from lately is Paul on his Facebook page. Granted it's all been updates about his solo record & tour, so nothing Hip related. But at least he's keeping fans up to speed. Seems like the rest of the guys have completely disappeared into their family lives, which is all well and good. I'm all for them taking some time off from the rock n' roll machine, but it would be nice if their management would at least give us a little update here and there. You know, like every other band on the planet does.
I did hear that the long-rumored Sadies/Downie collaboration is finally being released this year. Can't remember exactly where I read it, but I'm pretty sure that came straight from one of the guys in the Sadies. I wonder if they'll tour for that record. And will Gord actually use his natural singing voice if they do? The Sadies are consummate professionals, and I doubt they'd put up with Gord's screaming crap for an entire tour. It'll be interesting to see what happens when that album finally drops.
As for the Hip, I really hope they can come back and rediscover the magic again. As recently as 2009 I considered them the greatest rock n' roll band in the world. But unfortunately their stock has dropped considerably with the last couple of tours. I'd love to see them prove us all wrong and kick our asses once again.

I hope its just a bit of time off to get the train back on track. I don't want them to (or expect them to) make another Day For Night, but I sure miss the sound that made them The Hip and I keep hoping with each new album, they'll return to it.
I had such high hopes after In Between Evolution came out, I really thought they were on the path back, but then took a huge detour with everything since.
It reminds me a bit of Rush, in the 80's they lost their way a bit, but then "Presto" came out and you could hear them coming back to what made them Rush. After that album they returned more and more with each album without sounding like they were "remaking" any album............
I really thought In Between Evolution was their slow return, kinda like Presto was...................
Still crossing fingers though

I agree an update would be nice I mean what do they think Twitter is for...isn't Mav the one doing all there stuff anyway for social media where has he been? With that being said NFPA is only just over a year old, they are not going to pump out new material like the did in the early years...I will be happy if it is just sooner than my second favourite band U2...talk about a gap between albums with their last two!

Dire Wolf - if memory serves me correct The Weakerthans played three shows last year.
There was a story in the Winnipeg Free Press a week or two ago about Stephen Carroll (guitar player in The Weakerthans) being named the director of a local music venue here in Winnipeg. His quote was something about The Weakerthans not being active right now and no plans for the future.
Regarding The Hip, I thought there was a story late 2013 about some small town festival in ON negotiating with them to play a festival this summer but it was too expensive. Anyways, if that's being discussed I'm sure it will be more of the same from The Hip this summer (boring festivals in boring venues with boring setlists). Is it my imagination or have they played more smaller cities in Canada over the past ten years? Maybe they feel like it's easier to trot out their greatest hits shows in places that don't see them that often, or haven't seen them before.
