I'm just sad that we probably won't be able to keep both Matsui AND Damon...I don't want to see Matsui playing for anyone else in his MLB career, but at the same time, he's not a servicable outfielder any more, so I don't know if there will really be room for him as a full-time DH...if they traded Melky, and made Gardener the full-time CF, then they could potentially still have room for Hideki and Johnny. IDK, I guess I'll just h ave to wait and see, and enjoy this offseason to the fullest!

Congrats to the Phillies on acquiring the Best Pitcher in Baseball. Sad to see him go but it was certainly the right thing to do for the Jays long term. And thank god they kept him away from the Red Sox and Yankees. I don't think I'd have been able to handle that. Go Phillies!

I feel the same way. This throws the Jays into full-blown rebuilding mode which is clearly the right direction to go.
And now I'm cheering for the Phillies to win the Series next year.

I love how I got called bandwagon fan by Cfer for a couple years on here, even though I've been a Yankees fan my whole life, and now you guys are jumping ship now that the going's about to get tough for the Jays. For shame. Even though the Jays will uundoubtedly suck next year. I predicted the Jays would finish dead last in the AL East this year (on another board), and I was close, even though their early tear didn't make my prediction look very good for a while. In 2010, they have a shot at finishing last in the whole AL.

^ Not sure how you interpreted that as "jumping ship" as we both stated it was a good move for the Jays. I will always be a Jays fan, and in fact I'm probably more interested this year because at least they've shown they now have a plan, something that was severley lacking the past few years under JP. Will they be bad? Sure, there's a good chance of that. But they do have a good core young players that will be exciting to watch, and I think they may surprise a few people.
I will also be cheering for the Phillies because Roy Halladay is not only the best pitcher in baseball, he's also one of the classiest people in all of pro sports, and I don't know how anyone could not root for him. He deserves a shot at a ring and I hope it gets it.
As for the Yankees, congrats. They were finally able to buy themselves a World Series. Given how much more they've spent on payroll than their nearest competitor (never mind the league average) over the past decade, it's pathetic that it took this long.

There's not a goddamned thing stopping Rogers from spending money on their team either, except for them being cheap basterds, and not giving a fuck about their baseball team...it's not the Yankees' fault that other teams don't have passionate owners with deep pockets...
I think Jim Ballsillie should say fuck the NHL, buy the Jays, and pump some money into them, that'd be way better for pro sports in Canada than another hockey team could ever be...

The Jays are totally screwed for a long time. Trading their best player ever was not a good move. Who knows what the prospects will be like (take a look at the Johan Santana trade, only 1 of the four players the Twins got back are still with the team). I know they didn't have a lot of options as Halladay would leave after this coming season, but they don't have a lot of talent, and even with the new prospects, their farm still is still terrible thanks to J.P. and his refusal to draft high ceiling high school players. The one time he did that it landed Travis Snider, who is going to be great, but other than him, Lind and Hill there is no one. The Jays should have landed Lackey and Bay or Holliday, and made a run at the playoffs in hopes of keeping Halladay. They have said they could have a payroll of about $120 million, so why don't they? They can afford to pay a bust like Vernon Wells $20 mil/year you think they could sign some top notch free agents.
A team with Hill/Lind/Bay(or Holliday)/Snider would be a decent nucleus. Or at least try and get a decent 2nd tier OF and a decent infielder, I mean they are going to run Batista and Encarnacion (sp?) every day? ARE YOU SERIOUS??!!!!! :nooooo Not to mention the poo poo combo of Gonzalez and MacDonald at SS. Yes they are great defensive players but why not ditch the DH while you are at it and have the pitcher bat because they won't be much worse at the plate than these two. I have never been so depressed about the team as I am now; there is no hope for the Jays. After following them for 25 years I am so close to giving up on them. I will definately be cheering for the Phillies this year, I'd love to see Halladay win a ring or five and it will be good to see him dominate the post season. It should have happened in a Jays uniform...
And don't hate the Yankees, hate the system.

Melky traded to ATL for Vasquez...I had a gut feeling Melky would be traded when they picked up Granderson.
I like this move, for two reasons:
1) Obviously, the Yankees get a quality pitcher coming off of a career-best season, solidifying the rotation
and
2) This opens up the door for Damon to return!

Just like they were content to have Swisher at 1st base last offseason? With Melky gone, they need a LF, and I can't see BG getting the starting job just yet. It was reported that Damon was willing to accept 2 years for $20mil, and now that he sees he may have one last chance to rejoin the yankees, i think he will be willing to settle for less to return to the bronx and have a chance to defend the title. I'm thinking something like 16-18mil for two years with bonus incentives.
