How about Rounder Records get off of their fucking asses and promote this band?!
Get them on the late night talk show circuit.
Jimmy Fallon, David Letterman, etc....The Hip are perfect for both of these guys! Letterman is a HUGE music fan.
It isn't the music, or the lyrics talking about Canada, it is the record companies in the States that have done nothing for them! EVER!!
ROUNDER RECORDS: PROMOTE THE TRAGICALLY HIP!!!
FFS!
and thank Christ for Danny Ackroyd back in '95 on SNL!

They acutally had an invitation to go on Leno last year (tour?) but couldn't due to prior commitments. So it's not like they've never had opportunites.

That wasn't last year, or last tour even. It was when The Hip opened for The Who.
And guess what?...they have been back to the States many times since then, and nothing to show for it.
All I am trying to say is that they don't get the promotion that they need from the American Record companies.

Just curious, is their success in Canada really a result of better local promotion?

OK - An Aussie writing here. I lived in Toronto for a year (2002) and was blown away by a band that I'd never heard of that I kept hearing on the radio, called, of course, the Tragically Hip. Love the Paul Kelly reference. True story - I have friends from Australia who are living in Kingston this year. They've never heard of the Hip, but I convinced them to buy tickets to the Kingston show. They rang me in Australia as soon as they got home after the concert and were blown away, stating that the Hip sounded like a cross between Midnight Oil and Paul Kelly. So I can understand where the thoughts of Paul Kelly and The Hip comparrisons are coming from. What I don't understand, however, is why they aren't big here (in Australia) at all, as others have mentioned.
Will we ever get another tour here???
Dom - Australia's biggest Hip fan. Any other Aussies challenging me on that one?
PS Can't get WATS out of my CD player...

I would have to say that their success in Canada has been by "word of mouth".
"Hey, there's this fucking band you gotta see!"
Have you ever seen a full page add for any Hip albums in the States?.....Be it Rolling Stone, etc...Either have I.
The Starbuck's thing was a nice surprise, for Coffee Girl.
I have been an obsessed fan since the EP. (maybe even a "man-crush"...lol)
And it really depresses me that The Hip do not get the recognition they deserve.
You get garbage, and I mean garbage bands like Pennyback(trying to be funny), Barenaked Ladies(please), Our Lady Peace(all my opinion) who sell millions of records in the States. Let's not forget about Sarah, Alanis, Bryan Adams who sell even more millions of records in the States.
It boggles my mind that these other performers do so fucking well in the States, and yet The Hip do not even register.
This may sound weird, but I do not buy any other Canadian bands, performers albums, because it is taking away from The Hip. I know weird, but that is just me.
Just once in my lifetime, I would love to open Billboard magazine and see in the top 30 albums..THE TRAGICALLY HIP
A guy can dream can't he?....lol
