I think it just has more to do with after the tour is over.
He does it this way to keep it organized for what he does down the road:

So every song played so far at the Massey Hall shows was played at least once elsewhere previously on the tour. I'm pretty surprised by that. Figured they were holding some gems back to unveil in Toronto. Maybe tonight...

You're not confused - it adds nothing (at least until you look back at the stats for individual prior shows on the tour, and even then adds next to nothing, for me anyway). The only possible point of it is that if you looked at the stats for a specific show (but not the most recent show), you could find out that you heard Coffee Girl for example the 11th time it was played out of 40 total times they played it this tour (that would look like "11 of 40"). If they also played it the next show that would be 12 of 40. But in the updates we're getting to this we're always looking at the latest/last show so the 2nd number and the 1st number are inherently always the same (and thereby adding absolutely no additional info) - because it's always the last time they played that particular song. But honestly - who cares whether you heard it the 11th, 12th or 40th time they played it, unless maybe it was the 1st time they broke it out so you knew how lucky you were to catch your fav?

I should have also added that the comments above are made "with all due respect" to the stats man who is going to all the trouble. And of course it's within our power to simply ignore that redundant 2nd number. So it's all good. Carry on.

Yah, ditto that last point. While I may not totally understand the x of y system, I do totally appreciate the effort, especially the parts I DO underatand!

Actually, there is a tiny bit of math involved.

I'm using the Massey Hall dates as a test to see how something could eventually look when the tour is said and done. This is very rough, and very basic, but here is a list of the six shows played in Toronto throughout the past week. All numbers and stats are based solely on these six shows.

You'll notice that for show one, <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://ttharchive.blogspot.com/2009/05/table_20.html">http://ttharchive.blogspot.com/2009/05/table_20.html</a><!-- m --> , the numbers beside the songs are 1 of X - meaning how many times it was played over the six nights. Suite is 1 of 6, Poets 1 of 4, Greasy 1 of 1, and so on.

You'll also see at the bottom a song rarity index, which is stolen from other bands, primarily dmbalmanac.com. To make this as easy as possible, this is the formula to determine "how rare" a show is based solely on the song performances. Take the number of times the song is played (X) and divide it by the number of shows there were (Y) to it's rarity value (Z). Add all the rarity values together for the show (A) and divide that by the number of songs played that night (B) to get the rarity index ©. For our purposes here, the lower the rarity index, the more rare the songs played at the show were.

For example:
Suite was played 6 times at Massey. Therefore its rarity index number is 1. Greasy was played only once; it's number is .16

Why does anyone care about this? Who the hell knows. Maybe no one else will. But it's another way to analyze the shows you go to and perhaps take some consolation when you hear Music At Work again. Or really, really understand how cool its going to be when you see them play Impossibilium in Rochester (a boy can dream, right?)

Anyway, this is a base idea of what I have for end of tour. I doubt it will look like this, as this is really something I was able to procrastinate with at work today - I would hope I could make it look a tad prettier in the long run. However, it's a start, and may help answer some "x of y" questions and quell some fears. Or could just open a whole new can of worms. Eff it though, I'm enjoying this while it lasts.

I get it. The final results will be interesting. MAv mentioned he wanted to do something similar but I don't know if this is what he had in mind. This type of stuff would be nice to have on the Hip site.

Thanks for doing this hotmetal401. As a DMB fan, I've been meaning to adopt the almanac's system for awhile (in fact, i might just do this for the WC tour, just so people can see what it will look like at the end).

Nothing wrong or weird with these stats, keep up the good work!
