Yeah and if I figured out how to download and convert FLAC files to mp3 then anybody can.

I have resisted asking for help with the Hiptracker but HELP! Perhaps someone could write up a quick set of instructions for dummies. I mean really dumb dummies. Picture a dude sitting on the sofa smoking a bong and crying over a long lost Hip tape. Now explain to me, errr, I mean him, the basic run down of how to use the Hiptracker.

There is a write-up on the tracker forum and I maintain a thread here that detail the hows and whys of the site: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://hipbase.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5229">http://hipbase.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5229</a><!-- m -->

If this is not what you need, shoot me an email and I'll walk you though it.

Here's a quick and easy set up for beginners (with PCs):

Download and install this bitTorrent client (bitTornado) - http://www.bittornado.com/download.html

Create an account with the Tracker, then go to the page with the Demos (link on the Tracker home page). Click on the torrent link at the top.

This will automatically start bitTornado. Pick a place on your computer to save the files, and let bitTornado download the files. You will know it's done, when bitTornado states 100% completed.

I don't get why it's a big deal for THIS recording. It's sourced off a scratchy, hiss-filled cassette.

For the live bootlegs that are done with high quality recording gear, I understand it, but for something where the quality is definitely not crystal-clear, I fail to see the major advantage to FLAC.

All the more reason to keep the quality as rich as possible, instead of making the files sound even worse by converting to MP3.

F**k iPods.

iPods can play files other than MP3...

True, but then again, why waste the space for the "higher quality"... I mean... if you are listening to the music on speakers the size of dimes, I think the difference between a Wav and an mp3 would be hard to detect. Personally, I can only tell the difference on my computer speakers... which are fairly big.
So that's why people would use mp3s for iPods. But on the other hand... they're getting so big now... space may be an obsolete argument soon.

Size has nothing to do with the quality of a speaker or microphone, the fact that you don't have a good set of headphones is why you can't hear a difference.

you've heard it before Sean...."Size doesn't matter"

Come one, this is getting ridiculous.
I understand we all want high quality sound, but some people don't want to convert; they just want MP3's.
If you don't like the sound, nobody's twisting your arm to download them. I think everybody should have access to this, and if they want it on MP3's, let them.
This isn't a big deal IMO. If you want flacs, fine, but not everybody likes flacs better than MP3's.

You're all kidding yourselves if you think you can detect an audible difference between a flac and an MP3 (unless the MP3 is like 95 kbps...)

I can understand the importance of maintaining the highest level of quality available for mass download. I remember before the days of the tracker when I first got into downloading boots through the internet...perhaps 7ish years ago. I was blown away by the DMB community and how they strived to maintain the integrity of each and every bootleg that was out there. At the time I got almost all of my Hip boots via trees or B&P and I always wished the Hip had a community of traders/collectors who cared as much for the quality of the music as did the DMB fans. We now have that community and it is very much alive and doing well.

FLAC are extremely easy to figure out and all a person needs to do is a wee bit of reading, of which links have been provided here. Once you have the FLACs conversion is a snap.
