Tell me Poets isn't dead here...that is terrible. To me it's one of their strongest album and live songs.

mine too

this summer when I heard Gord say this next story's true, and it isn't....true, and then Paul busted into the opening riff of 38 years old at Fort York it was the single greatest concert moment of my life. My legs were weak for the entire song. Still gives me chills just thinking about it.

Poets is a great single, and a good show opener, but IMO, 38 YO is a much better composition overall. The lyrics cut deeper, and the chord structure / arragement is a custom fit for the content.

Bobby's slide work on 38YO is perhaps the best he's ever done. Both haunting and arresting, it's a perfect accessory for the spooky, tragic tale being told.....

This is about the 3rd or 4th change in the lead song. We've had close compititions, but nothing neck to neck like this!

and i picked 38 :thumb:

Both songs are definitely in my top 5 songs ever.

After a few listens each, I'm going with 38 because it just gets me every time. It gives me chills whenever I listen to it.

I'm kinda surprised it's this close. It will be a photo finish I'm sure.

I wouldn't consider Poets winning as an upset..Poets is one of those few hip songs that both diehards LOVE and casual fans LOVE

99% of the time I’ll choose the “rocker” over the “ballad”, but 38 Years Old is a legend that contributed to my early fascination of the band.

The Heron Outside Wrote:Poets...Das Hips last great "First" single...And truly an incredible tune...The song never fails live, especially when Mr. Fay throws in some serious drum fills, a la NYE 1999...I always thought this tune would evolve into a Meridian/New Orleans, hoping they'd really jam out that middle, try out some new jams, stretch it into a 10 minute number...But hey, it still rocks with fervour...
Agreed.

I know the tourney is based on studio recordings and live versions should be ignored. However, since the polls are closed I will give a shameless plug for 38…pull out your Markham video from 7/24/93 and watch 38 again. The extended intro, the faster tempo, and the lack of an acoustic guitar turn this “ballad” into one of my favorite live recordings of all time.

I know the voting is done for this bad boy but.

The reason why I listen to the hip is because of my grade 10 English teach she made us do song analysis of 38 years old.
