Overrated/Underrated.
#46

FighterAndLover Wrote:If you can't say a song is overrated/underrated then you can't really say ANYTHING is, because it's all about perception.

This is my point. People have started saying this or that is "overrated", and it is meaningless to me.

The only meaningful use of those expressions is when the things being referred to are actually rated.

For example, the Duke University men's basketball team isn't ranked in either of the widely "recognized" polls (AP Top 25 / USA TODAY Top 25), yet a less recognized ranking system (which is much more objective and mathematical) has them rated #17 in country (Ratings Percentage Index). Looking at that more scientific RPI, you might argue that Duke is "underrated" in the AP and USA TODAY polls.

However, there no basis by which to measure my level of "like" or "dislike" of TTH songs to a concensus -- just a woefully inaccurate, unscientific sampling of people's comments posted here or there. Have you ever noticed how many people who post in "opinion" threads around here freely admit that their lists for "favorite" songs or albums might completely change over time? It's always "this could be completely different depending on the day" or "right at this minute"....

How incredibly scientific.

FighterAndLover Wrote:I think this thread is perfectly justifiable; if you scratch your head when fellow fans rave about a song, it's "overrated" to you. If you love a song that no one seems to talk about, it's "underrated." What's hard?

About all I can glean for certain around here is that Coconut Cream is widely despised, and that Hip fans seem to either love "In View" or hate it. Everything else seems to be a crapshoot.

I find it quite perplexing how many of y'all list "Courage" as "overrated". Seems to me like more fans tend to dislike it - so how is it "overrated"?

i'd just say the topic title should be somthing different.
Like "what songs are you sick of and what ones have you recently become to like"

Point me to the place where each song is officially "rated", and then I'll tell you if, in my almost-worthless opinion, it is 'over' or 'under' what I think it oughta be.

I'm not really convinced that you'd consider your opinion almost-worthless. Considering the nature of the original question in the thread, I think it is safe to say you take your opinions way too seriously.

Well then.
Since rankings were brought up, here is a list of all the songs The Hip have played up until World Container.
These are ranked in order from most played(NOIS 468 times) to least played (several tied at 1).
This must somehow be scientific, because I emailed The Hip and asked how they determine what gets played and this is the formula they gave me:
The basic SGP (song gets played) formula is:
---------------
1/4(Fans)
+
1/2(Band)
+
1/4(Moon Cycle)
----------------------
= Official Rating System

So now we can take the top half of the songs and list those as Over Rated, and take the bottom half of the list and determine those as Under Rated.
OK, now we can officially debate since now there is a basis.

(come on - who the hell cares - life is about opinions, and I am just bored at work amazed at how some people try and think too much. It is the internet, Hipbase, Just enjoy)

Of course I take my opinion seriously, but it's obviously not worth much to you. Just like how yours isn't worth a bag of shit to me.

Thanks for your input.

Sorry for bogging this whole thread down with that annoying, advanced level of thinking known as 'logic'.

Let me try to conform:

I'll say:

Underrated: Wild Mountain Honey

(even though I have no fucking clue how many of you like it or how much...all I know is I think it kinda somewhat doesn't seem to get quite enough praise for MY liking.)

Finally he or she gets the point of the thread. Have a cookie and gold star.

Now hand the cookie and gold star back for posting some of the self important pretenious rubbish i've heard since I was in my old universe student bar.

Could you please explain to me how debating the difference between rating (something semi-official with a base from which to make decisions) and liking (purely opinion based, and therefore, subjective) is self-important?

For example, if we all understood "underrated" as to mean "a lack of radio airplay", then the debate could continue. However, since there isn't really a set structure, the entire basis of this thread is merely a matter of opinion.

Which is all it's about, it doesn't need huge long sentences explaining how this thread is inaccurate.

Are you guys like this with jokes? After the punchline is delievered and everyone else is laughing your there going 'hold on the Irishman wouldn't do that....'?

It's a fun thread on the internet, lighten up honey.

For me, and I think for the people that appreciate this thread, I can get a pretty good sense of the songs that most fans on this site like or dislike through the infinite "favorite" songs as well as when the polls were taken for favorite song by album. Here is a chance for us to react to those polls/threads.

Courage made the cut for "Yer Favourites" and it makes the setlist most nights. I think that's reason enough, although I personally like the song.

The internet always continues to amaze me. We are all here because of a mutual love of 'The Tragically Hip' yet we are still trying to score points against each other.

This thread seemed pretty obvisous to me, I've only been a fan for a very short time yet I still tried to contribute the way the thread was designed, there really is no need to make more of it than the original poster was trying to do. If you really find it impossible to contribute too in the way it was meant then really you don't need to post in it.

I love Leave...it meant to be in my under-rated pile. Great tune.
