Goodbye Sarnia. I feel in time this will become a top three song for most people. That opening bassline is undeniable...then the acoustic kicks in...then GD's soaring vocal...it's pretty near a perfect song for me. I think GD got a bit lazy on the second half but still an amazing song. I feel once people have more time to digest, it will rise.

As I've been listening to MMP more intently over the past two weeks, In Sarnia is the song that my appreciation has grown for the most. You nailed the two most outstanding aspects of the song... the bassline (which is nicely pushed up in the mix) and the vocal performance. It's a great example of Gord pushing his vocal range to the top end but not going past his limit into territory where he gets spikier and thin.

For me, 'In Sarnia' is one of the best *compositions* on the album, as a piece of songcraft. It might be the most romantic thing in the Hip's catalogue, it has a fascinating melody, great chords, complex lyrics. Just excellent work. However, I rate it as a clear case of oversinging (despite GD's apparent view that he nailed the vocal), and that effect is made worse by the bizarre production treatment given to the vocal, which accentuates its problems rather than moderating them. So I can completely understand why some people love it and why it's been voted off before the final round. Great song, problematic recording.

Agreed. However, I love the rawness of Gord's vocals and I think the "oversinging" and production works well on the song as the speaker feels torn and lost because of the absence of a loved one to the point of developing "insomnia." I've been there. Probably my second or third favourite song on the album behind Machine and a toss up between In Sarnia and What Blue
