The New Maybe is decent, but No Threat is 3 glorious minutes of Hip-style badassery, and it won't be denied. Hard to believe it didn't make the cut for IBE or WC.
And whatever happened to that other IBE cast-off "Fighter Fighter"? There's a live version of that song that's been floating around for years in bootleg form. Makes me wonder if they ever got around to recording a proper studio version. It's a killer tune.

This reminds me that there is also an IBE B-Side of The Hip doing 'Night Is For Getting' kickin' around.

I voted for (i.e. against) The New Maybe. No Threat just basically kicked its ass, which is what No Threat does to other songs. No disrespect to the ass kickee, but you gotta go with the ass kicker.

I love both of these songs, it was hard to vote against one. I ultimately ended up voting for (against) No Threat as The New Maybe has a more personal connection for me. And I agree with Bonner that I would of loved to have heard No Threat live more over the years. Just last night I re-listened to the entire set from their 2005 show opening for The Stones in Moncton, which I believe was the 2nd time they played No Theat live. I personally don’t feel like either is out of place on YF.

NT kills, but I seem to remember it receiving a decidedly mixed response on this site when it came out all those eons ago. I think of it as among the first 'later era Hip' rockers - spikier and less anthemic than the earlier stuff, with Gord's thinner and more stab-like vocal stylings pushing it outside the comfort zone of mainline FM radio (which, I daresay, is the primary sonic reference point for many Hip fans - though not me personally). It's much closer in spirit to IBE or 'Goodnight Attawapiskat' than, say, 'Courage.'
