Michael Richard's Tirade
#31

cferneyh Wrote:I don't understand why anyone would be surprised about the big deal being made of this, especially in light of the recent Mel Gibson meltdown and the big deal that was made of that.

I'm not surprised by it. I just don't think it should be a big deal, like the Mel Gibson incident shouldn't have been a big deal. The big deal about Mel Gibson should have been that he was driving drunk. That's much more despicable than making a comment about Jews.

Michael Richards appeared via sattelite on Letterman last night and apologized.

I honestly don't think going on Letterman to apologize was the best move: a credible news source is what I would come to expect after an incident like that.

what's credible to you, CNN?... I think letterman and leno tell it like it is.

I just think that a comedy talk-show isn't the best way to make a serious formal apology. Compartively, CNN would definetly, to me, be a bit more credible. Now, if CNN is a credible news source is a completely different discussion

on a somewhat related note, I wonder if this will hurt the sales of the Seinfeld DVD's and the ratings in syndication. I think a new DVD is coming out this week sometime. I know I'm still gonna buy it.

Well, I'm sure he would have gone with a credible news source, but he wanted his apology to air in the United States.

You would never, never use the news for an apology like that if you had another option. As soon as it's on the news, you lose control of your message. Thanks to the j-school-fostered idiocy of mistaking polarization for balance, your apology will likely run cut down to two quick soundbites, followed by three talking heads who all agree that it's not enough and that you've revealed that you're a racist pig. Which isn't quite the message you want to convey.

That's why these things are always done on talk shows, unless there's no other option.

It comes out today. I too was wondering if it would affect sales. Jerry seemed quite concerned.

As they say in the entertainment industry though, there's no such thing as 'bad' publicity.

Although the things he and gibson said were terrible, it is such a shame to see the legitmacy of their work destroyed.

If the internet can make this "story" the lead on many newscasts, why can't it be used to effect some positive change in the world?

I heard somewhere that Richard may have been "encouraged" by the owner of the rights to Seinfeld to make the public statement. Whether or not he's sincerely sorry... well, who knows (or cares for that matter).
