My complete disinterest in listening to music on the radio - an activity I've never understood, since I don't know why I would let formula-driven bores and taste-challenged morons program my music for me - has probably helped to inoculate me from this problem of "overexposure." But maybe I over-estimate the extent to which certain Hip songs have dominated the airwaves.

I take it you've never worked north of fort mac for months on end with a work truck that contained neither a CD or tape player and only two radio stations to pick from: top forty rock and new country

They had a call in Hip fix at six, or something like that, and every second day, or so it seemed, there was a guy from NFLD requesting 50 MC and yelling "GO LEAFS!!!" it was madness.

I called every chance i got, the only deep cut i ever got them to play was Put It Off.

It was a good day.

One of my heroes, Elvis Costello, occasionally tours with a gadget called the "Wheel of Song," where he gets people from the audience to come on stage and spin the wheel to determine the next song in the set. I was at one of these shows, and a woman bounds onto the stage and Elvis asks if there's a song she especially wants to hear. She blurts out 'MY NAME IS [WHATEVER] AND I WANT TO HEAR "ALLISON!!!"'

All of which is to say, yeah, there is no end to the extent to which so-called "fans" only really ever listen to an incredibly narrow band of Greatest Hits. My sympathies, brother!
