Not only did he not do that, but if it wasnt dor Gordie chatting him up from on stage, he likely wouldnt have had much, if any, airtime once the show began..and im positive that was a directive right from his desk

Hes a good person this PM...Ive changed my tune dramatically about him over the last five years...I really think this is a person woth a moral compass and Im proud to have him as our leader

Gord is clearly taken with the current PM, as most Canadians are. And the PM conducted himself with class, discreetly occupying a cheap seat and in no way scoring the easy photo-op. That said, Gord's comments were also strategic, I think - using the leverage available to him to define the PM's mandate in terms of climate change and justice for first nations. Clearly, the Fort Nelson gig was a seminal life experience for Gord. And it's a shame, in a way, that 'Goodnight Attawapiskat' was not a hit, because if it had been, I'd lay odds that it would have been his preference for show closer. Just my guess.

This. I loved it for exactly this reason. The suicides in Attawapiskat this year drew national attention through the media, but I doubt the message has ever been delivered so strongly and to so many people in this country as last night.

Full disclosure: I would trade both of our presidential candidates and the city of Seattle for your PM. In fact, I think most Americans would, with the possible exception of Seattle.

As an outsider looking in (granted, a liberal one), it seemed to me that Trudeau was pretty damned respectful of the event, pretty apolitical, and making the focus the band. As the leader of the nation, he has certain ceremonial responsibilities, and promoting one of the finest artists produced by your nation (or any other, IMHO) would certainly fall within that role. One symbolic moment I saw was him as one of three guys holding up a large Hip banner on Princess Street before the show - he was literally just another Canadian lifting up the name of some important to all of us. Very classy, and humble, I thought. You guys are lucky.

Also, I fully agree about the idea that Gord was as much applying pressure as expressing approval. It's not often you have the undivided attention of your nation's leader, and Gord very much seems like the type of person to take full advantage.

I was hoping they would comeback with Goodnight Attawapiskat as the lead song in an encore. It would have been perfect.

Gord's recognition of the Prime Minister at the same time as imposing a mandate/responsibility on him, was very moving, very touching. I hope this gives Trudeau the political good will to make some real, positive, and immediate change.
