Dylan and the Foos: tour dates
#31

skippy the wonder dog Wrote:You either get it, or you don't. Dylan concerts always draw this reaction. Non-fans figure they want to go and see him, not knowing what to expect, and drag in expectations based on old recordings or the few songs they've heard on the radio.

What they get is a guy who refuses to address the audience playing arrangements that bear little resemblance to whatever was on the album. And then they complain that they went to see an artist they didn't know, and who they evidently didn't really like to start with, and wound up not liking the show.

What exactly did you expect?

How come whenever you put the hip down (their last 3 albums) and people come on here and defend them, you get angry about it and say that everyone is entitled to their opinions, but when someone says they didn't enjoy a recent Dylan concert you berate them about not having knowledge of his music and try to belillte their opinion. I wasn't at the show so I can't comment on the quality of the performance but not everyone is going to like every performance. I do find it odd however that Dylan would even be on a bill with the Foo Fighters, so I can understand how alot of people who are fans of the Foo Fighters would probably not enjoy Dylan's performance.

You bring up a VERY GOOD POINT. Skippy, the impression I get is that YOU are the only person who can criticize Bob Dylan. You get just as defensive as some Hip fans when other people have criticisms.

Uh, let's see: I said, "you either get it, or you don't." And I said that people who come in with the wrong expectations are likely to walk away disappointed. And I said it's easy to understand where negative reactions would come from.

This is putting people down? Saying that people who expect tea are going to be disappointed with coffee?

Yeah, okay.

You think D-Row dragged on too long, or that his voice is irritating, or the new arrangement of some song or another sucks, or you think Denny Freeman's guitar playing is shit? Fine, fair enough.

But if you want to complain that he didn't do a song and dance act, or didn't smile and yell "Hello, Cleveland! You ROCK!," or didn't play the songs the same way he does on the record ... well, that's like going to a Hip concert and complaining you don't like it when Gord Downie rants and dances around. That's the well-known schtick, so what did you expect?

You think I get defensive at criticism of Dylan? Have you ever visited a Dylan board?

Tell ya what: f**k off. Go play games with someone else.

So what if you ARE A FAN and still weren't pleased with the concert? Is that a valid opinion? If someone comes to the show with the expectation that they will be entertained by Dylan and they fell let down, is it their fault because they just "don't get it"?

Yes, fine. So what's your point? We're talking about someone who apparently went in expecting to see Dylan do something he's well known for not doing.

I wasn't entirely pleased with the show, myself. But it's not because I expected him to be someone else.

I saw the show in Toronto last night, and then blogged about it this afternoon--a review which said, in sum, "With His Bobness, you either go along for the ride and you enjoy it, or you don't and you don't." I went with three other people, and I don't think any of them really enjoyed themselves; my girlfriend claimed she did, but I think she was throwing a bone in my general direction more than anything else. But it's true: if you're going to see Dylan to rear you head back and belt out the chorus to "Like a Rolling Stone", then you're going to be underwhelmed. If you're going to listen to his music, and if you go with a totally open mind, then you'll probably enjoy yourself.

I love Dylan, and what's more I love what he does to his music in concert...so yeah, I enjoyed myself. But having said that, I can totally understand why people walk out of his shows--because in essence, they didn't go along for the ride. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, either, but it's the way it's gonna be I guess.

two friends of mine went, they do not know each other and they both said the show sucked. Which is too bad. They basically said it was extremly boring and it pretty much sounded like one long song all night. They are pretty big music fans.
Maybe it is time for Bob to hang up the touring bus, and concentrate on making great albums, which he still does. For so many people to say a show sucked, doesn't say much for the guys desire to even be out there. To not acknowledge your fans or even turn around to face the crowd that you had your back to the whole time is pretty bad.
Can you say in it for the money, I think so. ( when it comes to touring)
