I think that Amazon might take over as my favourite mapping site! A9 is their new mapping service and it takes it to a whole new level!

Although only in beta, and only listing 20 major US cities, A9 takes users on a street level tour. They drove every street in each city with an SUV equipped with a digital video camera and lots of hard drive space. The location of the images was then mapped using GPS and the resulting ability to "drive" down the street is pretty awesome.

And if you are a Flickr fan... there are lots of pics tagged a9local. If you set the slideshow speed to 1 second, it creates a cool stop motion sort of video drive down the streets.

I dunno chris, but my top two guesses are:

1) Vineyard?

2) Sod Farm?

I'd have to assume it's something agricultural....

Sod farm was my first guess, but it doesn't look organized enough.

If you zoom in all the way, the most western one almost looks like exposed rock.

It certainly covers a large area; more googling should reveal the answer.

I wonder what kind of aggregates (stone) they are mining. If you look real close, it does look each of those swaths are are excavated & graded, and the center of each swath appears to be a lower elevation.

In other words, they seem to be big trenches......
