I actually saw the story ran on CNN about NOIS not being played on some radio stations before it was mentioned on here.

With all of the talk about NOIS, it hadn't really occurred to me how powerful New Orleans is Beat is now. It just came on my stereo randomly, and it chilled me. It could have been written after the flood.

Like a nothing love song that suddenly resonates after you've fallen in love (or, more apt in this case, had your heart broken), the song now cuts deeper than I could have ever imagined. It sounds like a requiem.

I was wondering when someone would get around to NOIB. The masses that don't understand the song may end up wanting it banned as well. Personally, I'd love to see a montage of all the devastation while NOIB plays over the footage.

Its hard enough just watching the news. Such a moving tribute would probably drive anyone who sees it, Hip fan or otherwise, to tears.

Same here. All the news of "armed gangs" conjures images from Escape from New York and Escape from LA (where the hell is Snake Plissken when you need him?). Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like it's gonna get any better anytime soon.

Anyone ever read Blindness by Jose Saramago ... about a whole bunch of people who go spontaneously blind from some contagious disease, so the government locks them into an insane asylum to fend for themselves. Law, order, and everything else breaks down and people are starving, living in feces and filth, raping each other, stealing from each other, and killing ... and then they manage to break out of the asylum and it turns out the whole city has gone blind and there are roving gangs of people wandering the streets, moving into abandoned buildings and cars, looting stores and supermarkets ...

The novel centres around the one character who has not gone blind -- rather she has pretended to be blind so that she is not separated from her husband by the government -- she gets to witness all the depravity first hand.

It's an intense book ... and here I was thinking it was just a book.

I didn't know this until I checked just now on Chapters/Indigo, but it won the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature (in the original portuguese). I read it about 2 years ago (in the non-original english) on my wife's recommendation.

It was probably the best book I've read in the last 5 years, and easily the most chilling.

I couldn't agree more. And Heaven Is A Better Place Today and Summer's Killing Us" is also somewhat applicable.

You know what's pathetic? Radio stations pull "New Orleans is Sinking" in order to not offend the sensibilities of the politically correct. They claim they're being sensitive and doing the right thing. However, doing the right thing and being sensitive to the plight of our American neighbours in the south entails action.

Being sensitive and doing the right thing would be in offering direct aid, fundraising and otherwise materially supporting the efforts down there (of the red cross, perhaps).

So have they pulled this song in order to "be sensitive" and "do the right thing" or to assuage their own guilt of not doing anything at all except pulling a song?

Get it together and help a country that provides more foreign aid than anybody else.

Did anyone hear Gord Sinclair's statement on the radio this morning about all of this? He basically said the band understands why NOIS has been pulled from the airwaves and they totally respect that. He then went on to explain how the song is really a tribute to the city and how much the band loves it there. He also said they probably won't be playing it in Moncton either....but I think we all knew that.
