I have 3 friends who had to drive to Texas to get out of harms way.
This entire situation is going to be incredibly sad and way beyond
what we can imagine. NOLA is a great town, damnit..

One of my girls house is already 4 feet underwater behind the levy.
With a tide surge of 16 feet..I just can't imagine.

The roof of the SuperDome is coming apart, and there's water leaking in. Many of the pumps that they use to keep the low lying areas of the city dry have failed, and there is no more than 6 feet of water covering large sections of town.

This is getting really bad.

last night at work I was tellin all my American co-workers "new orleans is sinking"...none of them got it...one fellow Canuck asked if I felt like swimming though....

but honestly, this sucks, i would hate to have to deal with all that shit right now.

Im thinking about the people there (my way of sayin I'm prayin).

I know you didn't mean it literally, but it is a major concern in that all of the sewage is being washed into the homes and businesses - creating a breeding ground for sickness and disease.

looks like the brunt of the storm for new orleans is over now. The hurricane has been downgraded to a level 2. Fox news is reporting that it wasnt as bad as they thought it was going to be. Still though, reports of ppl stranded on roofs, no power and tons of flood damage. However most of the levies held.

I was reading an article on preparation in New Orleans for hurricanes and it seemed to imply that the levies might actually hurt the situation if a monster storm like Katrina hit N.O. by keeping all the water that has breached over the levies in the city itself. Anbody know how much flooding in N.O there is?

Reports are spotty at best. It appears that New Orleans faired relatively well compared to the doomsday scenarios that some of the "experts" laid out last night.

However, I think the news isn't quite so rosey for people in Mississippi, in particular Gulf Port and Biloxi. They took the brunt of the Eastern section of the "eye wall", which is always the most dangerous, both in terms of water and wind damage. No I'm not a meteorologist, it's just been a slow day and I've spent a lot of time watching CNN.

new update: Another of the levies have given way to the water putting an estimated 80% of the city under water, or at least flooded. People are still staying in the beat up superdome where there has been no electricity for 24hours. You can imagine the bathrooms in the superdome, not good conditions at all.

Getting some solid, steady rain here in Cincy from Katrina, but nothing of note compared to what residents of the deep south got hammered with...

I just talked to my NOLA friends, they are 100 miles from town in a hotel sharing a room wiht another family.. they are flying helicopters over the city street by street with cameras, then broadcasting what they have back to the residents to let them know if they still have a home. She lost her house, and the levee is broken, so they can't stop the tides from coming in..snakes, gators, dead animals, mud everywhere..she won't be able to even get to her property in probaby two weeks..

There is no water anywhere and the chemical spills are going to be impossible to clean up..

This is horrible..She believes the death toll will go above 1,000 after all of this is said and done...

The news coming out of New Orleans is very disturbing at this hout. 80% under water now and raising. The SuperDome now has a deathtoll. As to the question of rebuilding New Orleans.... It is a world class city and no matter how much it costs it can and will be rebuilt. I just don't know how many months it takes to build a ciity. I do know that it's a given that there will be a relief concert to raise money and it will HUGE.
