Yeah,
That is true that alot of these teams are making it tough to compete, but you have to recognize that many teams should not exist. Here's my list.
Phoenix
Atlanta
Nashville
Carolina
Anaheim
Tampa (regardless of Cup Win)
Florida
Columbus
That would leave 22 teams. Plenty of talent to go around.
I have to say, I do like some of the new game rules. I think it will open up the ice a bit, and provide a more entertaining game.
And just to re-iterate, Bill Wirtz is dick.

Bill Wirtz is definitely a dick. And that's the nicest thing that can be said about him.
I don't buy the "talent dilution" argument. The talent base has expanded just as rapidly as the league has. Think of it - 30 years years ago 90%+ of players were from Canada. What's that figure now? 65%? The simple fact of the matter is that players today are way better than they used to be (better training, better coaching, better conditioning, etc).
But yeah, there are some cities that shouldn't have a team. I'd take Columbus off your list, but I agree with the rest of 'em.

I actually debated columbus. It looks like they are supported well. Well, keep them, get rid of the rest, but bring back Quebec to keep it equal.
Perhaps you are right about the talent. But I am not 100% sold on the fact that there are enough goalies around for each team to have a solid one. Thoughts?

All you need to do to wonder about the quality of today's goalies - even the worst ones (like Dan Cloutier) is watch a game from the 80s. They were HORRIBLE then. But now, with the bigger pads, the advance scouting on the opposition (to isolate shooter tendancies), and the better positional play I think there are plenty of good to great goalies to go around - at least relative to a generation ago.

Okay,
But what about in the late 80's early 90's when Hasek backed up Belfour? Or when guys like Casey, Hrudey, Moog were back ups?

Kelly Hurdy never got to the Stanley Cup Finals at all as the L.A. Kings never got to the Stanley Cup Finals at all, because as we all know, Wayne Gretzky high-sticked Doug Gilmour in Game 6 of the Campbell finals, and the Leafs scored on the ensuing power play to go on and play Montreal in the finals...its true, look it up.

And then Montreal goes on to win the Cup like they did anyways, right?

Wouldnt that be something, Crosby goes to the pens, they build a team around him build a new arena, and 5-6 years later, he bolts for the Habs.. He'd be public enemy #1 in Pittsburgh after that. I sure hope we get him at some point...but does anyone think there is too much pressure on this kid? Comparing him to Mario and all that talk of him saving the pens and building a rink. Does anyone think he might not be the 100+ point superstar he's made out to be, or is it just a matter of time.. :?

I'm no scout, but when Gretzky says: "He sees the ice the same way I did", it makes you wonder......
wow, thats a bold statement coming from the Great One. Maybe he is the real deal..cant wait to see him play. That said, the NHL just released the 05-06 schedule today.. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature.asp?fid=424
