And flag waving is something else we really do not want to discourage. Correct?!?!
So what else is there?
I got reamed here on Hipbase for launching into this issue as a "newbie". Well, actually, I got reamed for drawing a parallel between the boorish, overstated nationalism on display at Hip shows and similar attitudes on this board, but it just so happened that the anti-american sentiment was especially high on the forum at the time, I guess. I regret making that association, because this forum deserves better.
However, I can assure you that some of the exploits of "patriotism" I have witnessed at Hip concerts is, in fact, specific to
a contingent of Hip fans. I've been to hundreds of concerts for many different acts, and easily as many sporting events, and I assure you that I have *never* seen such recklessness, carelessness, and insensitivity on display by any one group trying to draw attention to their nationalism. Especially early in The Hip's career - I remember going to some Ohio shows in the early nineties with a few friends where it was seriously like watching a bunch of six-year-olds crawling all over each other screaming "look at me mommy...LOOK AT ME!" The first time we witnessed it we just traded quizzical looks and asked each other "what the
fuck?"
Don't get be wrong, I realize that the percentage of Canadian Hip fans who act in such way is a minority, but 'it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the whole bushel' as they say.
The sad part is that the idiots whose behavior earned that reputation for Hip fans everywhere got an official pardon from Gordie himself this weekend, as he took the fall for the beer-spilling flag wavers out there:
"
Hate the band, hate me, but don't hate the fans, it makes you sound like a fucking fascist."
Or, Gordie, maybe it makes you sound like someone who hates poor concert etiquette?
