The nerdy guy was Ed Robertson from barenaked ladies.
oh wait, the other guy... His name is Mike Smith from trailer park boys aka 'Bubbles'.
In season 3 of the show, alex lifeson is kidnapped and bubbles becomes his guitar tech. Alex and Bubbles played closer to the heart at the end of the episode.

I don't know if it was a fluke or planned....that episode, entitled "Closer to the Heart" was on Showcase last night.
