Haha. I picked Downtown because the Hip are great at the chunky guitar chords. I think it's a great song and a great album, "Mirrorball".

'Losing My Religion' is good because it sounds like a Hip song. They could play it well. 'Daughter', or pretty much any PJ song would be great! 'Cortez the Killer' is a great song but I'm not sure if Baker and Langlois could play it well. Maybe I'm wrong though. 'Hey, Joe' is a fantastic choice. The reason I didn't pick certain songs is that I'm not sure if the band could pull them off. Some Zep stuff is pretty complicated. I thought of "Keep on Rocking in the Free World" but then remembered Gord kind of massacre it in the Music Without Borders Concert. I'm not so sure Gord is suited for that song.

"Downtown" is a genius call. You can hear traces of Neil Young in Gord's voice, and this...this would be such a great tune for them to cover. There isn't much I can imagine the Hip covering (since, y'know, they never, EVER play cover tunes), but this song is most definitely one of them.

On a semi-related note, Pearl Jam are throwing more and more covers into their sets than ever before. I saw them on back-to-back nights in Boston a couple weeks ago and heard (including one of Ed's solo presets) thirteen covers. Not that there's anything wrong with that...I mean, hearing Ed ape Jello Biafra on "Bleed for Me" was one of the highlights of my Pearl Jam concertgoing career. Just an interesting counterpoint to the Hip.

Someone mentioned No Quarter (Zeppelin) earlier....this song is one of the greatest songs ever written, and has some of the most genius guitar lines ever conceived.

Have you heard Tool's cover of this song? If not, you simply must check it out. Cover songs rarely come out as brilliant is this.

I would also love to hear a cover of Country Joe Mcdonald and The Fish - Feel Like Fixin' to Die Rag.....Fish Chant or no Fish Chant I just think it would be wild to hear then cover that.....

I'd love to see them cover almost any Neil Young, but I'd really like to see them break out Sweet Jane again from the Velvet Underground. I love that tune.

I'm gonna trump all of you here. As a native Detroiter, I GREATLY appreciate the Gordon Lightfoot cover; Black Day in July. Great song, huge historical event, the magnitude of which, people outside of motown do not understand. I mean, the national guard was FIRING on people with machine guns and tanks! So, from that pov, I love that cover.

But. Since you "wouldn't be a band from Canada without a song about a nautical disaster," I would KILL to see my Hip pay further homage to Gordon Lightfoot and play "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

If your'e ever at a show in Chicago or Detroit, and hear some guy screaming while the guys are banging on the triangle before ND, "This is for you Capt. McSorely" that's me.

I have to put in my thoughts on this one. I would choose:

Superstition (More leaning towards the Stevie Ray Vaugh version)
Corduroy (Pearl Jam)
Rain King (Counting Crows)

I know they don't have keys in the band, normally, but I'm sure they'd come up with a great arrangement of Superstition.

On an old "rockumentary" based on the career of 54-40, the Hip were shown jamming in Australia and doing a cover of "Baby Ran." It was so good and now everytime I hear this song on the radio, I picture the Hip playing it.
