He wasn't crying and he wasn't trying to motivate the team. He was deflecting attention away from the team so that they could focus on the hockey itself and not the weight of a nation nor the criticism from the "expert" media.

But I think what he should have done was trashed their rooms at the athlete's village and then refuse to step forward and admit it was him. That's a classy move! Oh no wait, Team USA beat him to the punch.

They might have been told the rumours, but I fail to see how they could start them. Any such rumour would obviously have to have been started by someone who claimed to have access to the US women's locker room, or knew someone with access. Ergo, not a Team Canada member.
