cratch: Whats wrong with The Great One? He is one of the most humble people associated with Hockey? I don't get it. I can see that directed to Roenick, or to Hull, or to Roy. But Gretzky?
It is a moot point really. The Americans will be thrashed tonight!

Yeah, I'd much rather have a prick like Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens represent my favourite sport.
Gretzky has done more for the sport of hockey than any other person alive, and he has remained gracious and humble while doing it. On top of that, he was either the greatest (or 2nd greatest if you are a fan of Bobby Orr) player to play the game, and he managed to stay out of the tabloids by not contracting HIV from groupies, by not knocking up eight different women and fighting child support payments, and by not having extramarital sex with 19 year old hotel workers.
In other words, GRETZKY IS THE MAN.

Victor Newman is the man. I think Gretzky cheapened his legacy by his crying during the olympics. I know some of you will say that it fired up the canadian team and made them win the gold but the reality of it is.....IT IS THE OLYMPICS AND YOUR'E PLAYING FOR CANADA....YOU DONT NEED ANY MOTIVATION!!!!!!!!

He wasn't crying and he wasn't trying to motivate the team. He was deflecting attention away from the team so that they could focus on the hockey itself and not the weight of a nation nor the criticism from the "expert" media.
But I think what he should have done was trashed their rooms at the athlete's village and then refuse to step forward and admit it was him. That's a classy move! Oh no wait, Team USA beat him to the punch.

first of all i never said that team USA was classy in Nagano in 98 . I simply stated that Gretzky is a whiner. I didnt mention the canadian womens team starting rumors of the US team stomping on its flag in the olympics either. cause thats classy too

Out of curiousity, how exactly could the Canadian women's team "start rumors of the US team stomping on its flag in the olympics"? They might have been told the rumours, but I fail to see how they could start them. Any such rumour would obviously have to have been started by someone who claimed to have access to the US women's locker room, or knew someone with access. Ergo, not a Team Canada member.
Hey, if you think Gretzky is a whiner you are certainly entitled to your opinion. But there's a lot of irony in a Hasek-fan calling Gretzky a whiner.
