Pearl Jam fans don't bring Pearl Jam flags to Pearl Jam concerts because the majority of them hate their current president and what he's done/doing to their country.
America is completely different from Canada in the sense that we feel we constantly have to advertise our nationality whenever we get the chance, whereas Americans seem to only do so at international sporting events and when they are being threatend (9/11). Canadian's are proud of their country and I don't see what's wrong with showing it off.
I personally don't see what the big deal is as long as people aren't being obnoxious with it. Wasn't it awesome seeing The Hip at Woodstock with all of those Canadian flags in the crowd? Or how about at the Olympics the night before the men's hockey gold medal game with all Canadian flags in the audience?

the fact that the hip are playing on Canada Day has a lot to say. Myself, I will be bringing a Canadian Flag. Not to be waving it at the show, but becasue it will be Canada Day, and I want to show my pride. As long as people respect others by not being stupid with the flag, I really can't see the problem with it. :thumb:

I think a lot of it boils down to the fact that many Canadians have an inferiority complex when it comes to the States. You can flame me all you like for saying that, but as a Scot who has lived in Canada for some time now (don't get me wrong, I love this country) I am amazed that so many people are sooo concerned about what the Americans think about us, including the media. I think the flag waving is an extension of that, especially when it happens in the States. Das Hip are a proud Canadian commodity and some people feel the need to advertise that.
Personally, flag waving at shows doesn't bother me as long as it doesn't block my view or the flag waver isn't being obnoxious, however I always thought that flag etiquette dictated that wearing a flag as a cape, diaper, shirt, shorts, hat or whatever was quite disrepectful to the flag.
My two cents.

Canadians bring flags because when it comes to popular music, we are the minority compared to the US. When I first got into the Hip in 1992, I actually thought they were American! I assumed it. Why? I think everyone assumes that certain things just come from the US and then are amazed when they find out they are not. With Canada and the US, Canada always seems to be the underdog, so when we feel we've got something great, we let everyone know that it's Canadian, not American!
