The Hip and Canada/Canadians -
eric_c - 06-22-2004
What is this obsession with some fans to intertwine Canadian nationalism with the Hip?
Seems like alot of fans would like to see the Hip walk out on stage, Canadian flags draped on their backs, escorted by Mounties in full dress uniform, live beavers running around on the stage, recite the "I am Canadian" monologue and then belt out "Oh Canada"
For example, the Much Music I&I when the crowd spontaneously breaks out into "Oh Canada" (clearly to the discomfort of Gordy).
Or the beginning of the Zoo Ampitheatre in Toledo, when he's taking about the ratio of Canadian Flags to American flags - Do people really bring Canadian flags to concerts of other Canadian bands? Is the Bare Naked Ladies audience awash in Red and White?
It just seems odd. I'm as proudly Canadian as the next guy, but being a Canadian Band is pretty much the last reason I listen to the Hip. Rush is a Canadian band and I pretty much feel like rupturing my ear drums with whatever sharp instrument happens to be on hand when they come on.
Canada defines the Hip, but do the Hip define Canada?

I agree man!!!! I hate seeing people wearing Canada flags at shows. The Hip are the greatest "Canadian Band". No one should sing Oh Canada at a hip concert. Same goes for any band!!! We're there to see them sing, not hear us.

As I've said before, music is universal...and musicians or music should not be tied down to a nation. Gord doesn't like the flag waving...I think it's annoying as well. Great that we're Canadians, but do we REALLY need to see another Cdn flag, or Roots emblazzed article of clothing at Hip shows??

I read some interview with Gordie once when they were playing in a club in Europe and this dope was waving a little Canadian flag like mad; basically annoying everybody in the club. Gordie finally had enough and went and snatched the flag away from the guy.

I draped myself in a Canadian Flag for Gordie's Intimate and Interactive last year. I was in the front row and many ppl have told me I was quite visible. However, I didn't analyze my actions. I just thought it would be fun to wear the flag with my buddies after a day of drinking in Toronto.

I don't really see anything wrong with it. I don't do it myself but I can see why people would want to bring a Canadian flag to a hip show. As long as their not being rude about it, what's the big deal? I don't see what's so annoying.
