You know what bugs me? The Hip will play these Theatre Shows to alot of Hip Club and other die hard Hip fans who have seen them a bunch of times before and also do not need to be "sold" on the band. We are people that will be devoted regardless....so why don't they just play the tunes we all love. They should be taking these polls seriously and determine what we want to here and just play them, dammit! If I hear,
ABAC, Springtime, Courage, NOIS, Fireworks, MAW, etc. one more time, I'll snap!
Anyways, I think we are all dreaming that they will bring out any classics, including - She Did'nt Know, 38 Years Old, Another Midnight, Fiddlers Green, Highway Girl, Cordelia, Everytime You Go, etc.
Maybe if we all get together and petition with thousands of Hip fan signatures for the next or final? tour, it could be a nastalgic love fest.

During the Phantom Power tour, I talked to Gord after a show in Rochester, and after I thanked him for playing Boots or Hearts and On The Verge. He commented that if it were up to him (since Gord S. writes out the song list each night), that he wouldn't play many of the old songs at all, because 'that was then, this is now'. He also can't remember many of the lyrics to the older ones without help. Maybe why none of the older songs show up too often.
Would surprise me if they played a request, but it would certainly be a pleasant surprise none-the-less.

Gord S. must be a big fan of New O, Poets, Courage, Spring, M@W etc, then.

Good points by all.... I have seen NOIS enough...period and yes a few others... They are borderline washroom breakers for me. Thats why I developed this idea... If they see a list of 5 songs in order of importance .. they can pick which one makes sense to them.
1. They will get this list/poll on paper in person.
2. They will get a creative email from me with the Poll results.
3. They will understand that time went into this and the results are probably from their top 5% of most in depth Fanbase.
4. Others who want to join in on this crusade will also email the band to drive home the desire to hear one or two of these tunes.
It's like marketing... we band together & drive it to them in multiple ways... It's not one person saying to them again..."Hey could you guys play 38 Yrs old?" It's the well-known Henhouse, Killerwhaletank and the new 335 members of Hipbase... saying HELLO... YOU KNOW US... WE ARE YOUR FANS
5. The Hip know who Rory is : He hands this to them... they'll glance at it for sure!
6. If 100+ emails arrive over the next 2 weeks or so saying the SAME thing.. Ross who looks after the email for them will get them the message - why? - because it is a little out of the ordinary... plus He lurks on the Henhouse daily!
With this Band anything is possible... they have done this before for fans when the reason was strong enough and the request made sense. We are giving them advance notice and a selection of 5 songs to choose from.. maybe they don't pick HWY GIRL... or Another Midnight... But hey if they pull out "FIGHT" or "Get Back Again"..... there will be some pretty happy Hip Fans. Not everyone can win here... but the anticipation of making this work is enough to giver all we got!
Jeffro - going to email tth@thehip.com with this link www.hipbase.com asking them to vote!

I ended up voting for Problem Bears, because I think that it has the most realistic chance we have of getting our request played. Its a new song, and although it wasn't actually on the new album, I'm sure its been pretty widely heard by now. Also, we know that the band enjoys the song. If it weren't for the late arrival of Silver Jet (and one other song which has escaped my mind?), Problem Bears would have been on IVL. In fact, if we were to start this whole poll discussion all over again, I would be pushing for Ultra Mundane to be on the list over Problem Bears, but that's beside the point.
If they decide to pay any attention to this request at all, I do believe that Another Midnight or Fight also stand a chance of being considered. However, there's no doubt that the band would have to start practicing the song, and Gord would have to re-learn the lyrics. I hope that they put out the effort if one of those song wins our poll, but they just might not be able to make the time during a hectic tour.
Highway Girl will never be pulled out again. Although it would be fun to hear, the Hip are beyond songs like that, and will never turn the clock back that far!
Get Back Again would be amazing, but even less realistic! An almost 10 year old unreleased song? Never. Well, not never, there was "Montreal" in Montreal, but the circumstances were different. The date and location screemed for that song to be played, not to mention that the band were playing two long sets plus an encore every night. They had more than enough stage time to squeeze something like that into the mix.
Oops, I forgot about Sherpa. Hands down that is our second best chance. (Honestly I think it's probably got a better chance then Problem Bears, but since my vote has already been cast, I'll never admit to saying that!)

I voted for Problem Bears. I prefer the two more recent songs anyway.

Ok,
I say we all agree on two songs to promote.
We must be realistic and do some compromising.
I would chose "Another Midnight" and "Everytime You Go." My reasons for "Everytime You Go" are, it absolutely rocks live and they are slightly more familair with it considering they palyed it at least once during An Evening with... tour.
Let me know.

Bry,
We already choose 5 songs... they are on the Home page of this site. I started this a while back because I help Lance look after the POLLS section. The idea was to ask everyone on the Henhouse List which has been around for 5,6yrs+ and Rory's site members of Killerwhaletank and here the newest and one of the best Hip spots around IMO... For their favourite old Gem they would want to hear at the Hummingbird. Others would get to hear the Bootleg audio and video etc.. So I received about 60-70 responses and the top 6 songs (because 2 tied) are in that exact poll. If I had picked the 5 on my own... it would have looked abit different.. but I am glad I did it the way I did. So those are the six we are running with... and they will be presented with. Regardless of which tune wins they may choose the 2nd or 3rd.. one because it is more ideal for them to learn or more interest in playing it... what ever... I think all of this is posted in the beginning of this thread...

I agree with Hairbird that "Sherpa" would be our second best chance song to hear at the Hummer or anywhere else.
I saw them play it in Hamilton 12-21-00 and I didn't expect them to play that one. But at least they have played it recently (last 2 years) and still know how to play it.
So "thecompletist", what would you like everyone to say to the Hip via email?

Just out of curiosity Jeffro, when do you plan on closing the poll, or will you wait untill you get a certain number of votes? I'll wait to send my email untill the results are in, and after you've had a chance to send them off to the band.

We'll close'r up at the end of the month... probably Sept 30th. That way Rory can have a full report printed out to present to Gord Sinclair after the first Winnipeg Show. Plus I will be emailing a copy of that document into TTH@THEHIP.COM at that time. Maybe we'll post it here and everyone can cut and past it into their own email to send off. Although I plan on sending more than one email myself.
I use to live in Sudbury by the way...Hairbird.
