There's lots of great ones out there, most have been mentioned, so just to add a couple, The Tea Party's cover of Paint it Black is pretty awesome and I just recently heard Pearl Jam's cover of Waiting on a Friend by the Stones and its solid.

So on to the bad, and there's been alot of bad..

DMB - All Along The Watchtower
Marilyn Manson - Pretty much anything he's ever covered has been garbage.
Sheryl Crow - Sweet Child 'O Mine, I already hate SC so this was an easy choice.
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
The Ataris - Boys of Summer
Britney Spears – I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll, one of the worst EVER!!

Imagine a world before the "beginning was the word.”

Gord's Dylan covers are also quite good, esp. Going Going Gone. He's got the right kind of shambolic sensibility to do it well.

I saw the Waking Eyes do "Come Together" -- they did a stunning job on it.

I forgot about Going Going Gone, thanks for reminding me Skippy. Hopefully MAv can put it up as sotd again, or on the playlist, I can't remember but I know that's where I heard it.

I was actually gonna offer that version of "Paint It, Black" as one of the worst covers I've ever heard. That said, I despise the Tea Party--so maybe that's why.

Some more good ones:
-- Nirvana did some amazing covers in their time. "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam", "The Man Who Sold the World", "Seasons in the Sun"...the list goes on and on and on.
-- The Who, "Barbara Ann" (with Keith Moon on vocals...no, really, you need to hear this)
-- Sleater-Kinney, "Mother" (by THE Glenn Danzig)
-- Soundgarden, "Communication Breakdown"

Why do you think it's bad?

I thought it was pretty damn good - passionate & skilled. DM brings a heckuvalot more guitar-playing ability to that fine song than Bob himself ever did....

I like DMB and they do it well, but Jimi took this song and made it perfection, anything else doesn't compare. So I guess its bad by comparison more than anything. If Jimi never played this song, I would've left it alone.
