Setlist Problem and Upcoming Tour Setlists

seriously, they've done (in my opinion) very well at catering to a relatively small (yet very vocal!) group that wanted to hear some deeper cuts.
some people are never satisfied. i don't care how many shows you've seen - the band has no responsibility to anyone and yet they've managed to satisfy 99.9% of all people at the show, i'm sure.

Man, some of you guys are spoiled. The setlists on this tour have been awesome in my opinion. I don't get to see the Hip at all on this tour for various reasons, and I've been incredibly jealous looking at these setlists and reading all the reviews. I don't see how anybody could possibly complain about the stuff they've been busting out lately. I'd step over my own mother to hear songs like Inch an Hour, Don't Wake Daddy, Eldorado, Escape, Twist My Arm, Flamenco, the Rules, etc.. We asked them to reach back into the catalogue, and they're doing it. What more do you want?

I think if you'd seen as many shows as Mark has, you'd feel the exact same way.

Ok, I said I quit, but I can't deal with this. I would not feel the same way, I would look at myself, and say "Self, I've been to 305 shows. I am not the average fan, I am off the charts in comparison to most fans, I can never be satisfied with a set list ever again, unless they play highway girl. Perhaps I have overdone it a bit, I will never be surprised by any song they play, I've heard them all"

Who are you to tell me, what I would feel? I think he/you would feel the same way if he's seen only the 20 or shows I have seen. What's your point? There is none. We are not better fans than one another. Like I said I am sick of this place and these elitist fans who show their disdain for the set lists. I know what you mean, and I feel it, but to come on a board, and criticize the band, is selfish, nearsighted and is an insult to anyone who is mature enough to enjoy the band and any set list they put out. Your opinion matters as much as mine, why do you feel the responsibility to TELL me MY opinion?

You think I am stupid because I seem to enjoy hearing NOIS? It's not that I enjoy hearing it, it's because I have a positive attitude and make the best of any situation.

I'm not disagreeing with Mark, you or anyone for that matter. I do feel the same way, I don't think you/him or anyone is "wrong" in the way they feel. But I think that this type of thinking can be acted upon differently to result in alot less whining and crying.

My comments were primarily from a financial point of view. When I go to multiple shows of a band I want to ensure my money is well spent and I am getting value for my money. I want to be entertained and if the songs that my favourite band play are the catalyst to determine the number of shows that I go to then I want my money to be maximized by hearing as many songs as possible. I would never expect any band with say 130 songs to play them all on a tour. That would be ridiculous. I just think the ticket prices are far too high this tour and if I was to go to multiple shows I would still be happy that I saw the Hip for the XXX number time but I wouldn't necessarily say that way the best show ever and that I was happy that I spent $100+ for that ticket. On the other hand if tickets were $30-40 each I would say that each show that I go to was well worth it. I don't think any band in this day can ever satisfied a fan that has seen "everything".

I do however think the past tours were far more interesting ...

2009: two sets with an three song acoustic set
2007: Cover tunes
2000: Best damn tour ever - two sets

In all of those tours I feel I got tremendous value for my money. I loved each and every show I went to.

I totaly agree. The tickets prices are high. I think this should be considered by the band.
Especially when the venue they choose is an arena. To prove this I voted with my wallet. No arena shows for this kid.

To each his own, but this is the part that I don't understand. If it's so expensive, and people don't feel like they're shaking things up enough across multiple shows, don't go to multiple shows. See them once this tour. Either way this debate, and the people on either side of it, aren't going away any time soon. Here's to a solid rest of the tour!

I am about to see my 15th show in Winnipeg tomorrow night. I am liking the setlists. In realty though, they can't make a setlist based on the entire fan base seeing their 300th show. It is not realistic. The fact that they go as deep as they do is awesome. There really are so few groups who play the variety of songs these guys do.

A Hip set list is like a box of chocolates..you never know which one you're going to get.

For the record, I don't think you're stupid, nor do I feel any responsibility to tell you your opinion. I was merely making a suggestion. I think once we get into the venue, hear the songs, 99% of the people on this board would lose their shit and make the best of the situation, the song, the moment, just as you do.

But seeing as this is a discussion, I think the case can be made (As many have) that this band simply isn't doing all of their back catalogue justice.

i think as time passes, they become less comfortable doing certain songs that haven't been in rotation for a while, (obviously the ep, but there's a lot more) and they just want to make sure that whatever they play is up to snuff, which is the responsible thing to do, when touring is what you do for a living.

I think they should do a double album tour, they announce 3 or 4 consecutive nights in various places, like they did in 2009, 3 shows in Kitchener, then they announce that on night 1 they will play the entire Up To Here and Phantom Power, then night 2 they will play Trouble at The Henhouse and Music At Work and so on and so on, that would be a new spin on their tours. You can be sure to hear your fav albums as you would go to the shows that are showcasing those albums. Just an idea for a tour in between touring in support for a new release.

Pearl Jam once played every song they've ever recorded over a 3-night span in Boston a few years back. I doubt the Hip would ever attempt something like like that, but it would be amazing if they did.

I have the official recordings of those shows - 102 songs, 7 hours, 30 minutes. awesome.

this seems to be all the rage these days, tons of bands are playing full albums through. i think you're right - the hip catalogue would lend itself well to this show format!

I think the issue here is, we have been spoiled as a fan base to have been to multiple night theatre shows.

At those shows, you will see a far more varied setlist, because they know there are people coming to several nights in a row, and want to keep it fresh, so you get to hear the Fiddler's Greens, the Pigeon Cameras and the Unplucked Gems.....

In a single night arena show, they have to satisfy everyone in one shot, and to accommodate 18,000 people each and every night is a daunting task to even think about.

I went to both Red Deer and Edmonton on this tour, and it was similar, but they threw in enough surprises for me to leave each show happy.

Like a previous poster stated, they don't owe us a damn thing. yet, they still give us what we want. New albums and tours.

Relax, my homies.
