Setlist Problem and Upcoming Tour Setlists - pars9393 - 10-09-2012

So we all know that the hips sets have pretty much been the same for the last two years even though they have not been on a full tour, they have simply never repeated themselves quite like this!! People have said that it may have been just cause they were festival shows and such but if you look back at setlists thats not the case. They have always switched it up quite a lot and never ignored as many good songs as they have in the past two years. Take the Fort York Toronto shows in 2006, they played a completely different set on back to back nights and pulled out 38 years old for the first time in 13 years, even though they dont usually mix up setlists that much.

What will the upcoming tour be like??

I'm not asking for the hip to stop doing what makes them feel them feel comfortable, but I just wish they would wake up one morning and realize that they have sooooo many great songs that never see the light of day and they should never be afraid to play any of them, no matter what. Maybe they just need Pearl Jam to tell them that they will play anything they have ever recorded. Please everyone lets discuss this.

Wondering if the situation with Gord's wife may have limited rehearsal opportunities. Filtering through a massive catalogue on a continual basis takes practice and rehearsal, doesn't matter what band.

I'm sure that they have rehearsal time for the upcoming tour this month. I'm sure they'll treat us right, like they always do.

Exactly what I was thinking. The 09 tour was a solid effort by the band to perform both hits and to embrace some far corners of their awesome catalog but that certainly takes time and a fair amount of effort by the entire band. GD really looks spent emotionally from his personal ordeal. Setlists and other band related activity are far down the priority list when dealing with those things. On the other hand re-learning older material with the band is probably a bit therapeutic. Probably less than 50/50 in my opinion as to whether we'll see sets like we used to...fingers are crossed. As always we're not asking for Another Midnight or Train Overnight etc... but 50 MC or Three Pistols would be nice...etc

i just saw she had or has cancer, that is awful!! I definitely dont blame them for not rehearsing

We are all throwing out hypothetical reasons why the same setlists for the past two years because we are fans. Certainly not disrespectful in anyway.

I think the band is more focused on their solo careers now. I'm sure they still like making music with each other but it seems to me they're doing it because they're expected to do it or for the money. They say that they never mail in a show but to me playing the same set night in and night out is mailing it in. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing because the hip do put out some good shows even at 80%. This band has been doing this for nearly 30 years and i can see why they're losing interest. Thats comes with age and wanting to something different or expanding your horizon.

Also, don't forget that with each new addition to the discography, the available slots for setlist wildcards shrinks. Of course, they're gonna play the obligatory chunk from the record they are touring to support, plus a growing number of singles that veteran bands almost have no choice but to play. Touring is where the money is made - now more than ever. They aren't going to leave money on the table by playing things that don't have mass appeal amongst prospective concertgoers.

Hey, nobody regrets this reality any more than I do. I've seen 50+ shows, which means I've heard NOIS and Bones and ABAC and Courage and Fully and Meridian and Poets and Fireworks plenty enough for this lifetime.

I still have faith that they'll dig deeper into the back catalogue for the upcoming tour. I believe!

That is terrible, some things just don't seem important anymore when in that situation.

It's going to be hits plus new songs and if we're lucky a few slightly less common songs.

I won't be there to see it.

I respectfully disagree. Despite the repetitive setlists of late, I don't get that impression at all. To me these guys seem just as focused on the band as anything else they happen to be doing as side projects or solo efforts. A lot of the material on the new album can easily stand alongside their best work in my opinion (We Want to Be It, Now for Plan A, Man Machine Poem, Modern Spirit, The Lookahead). This is not the work of a band just mailing it in. I've been bitching about the setlists just as much as anyone here, but I have a feeling we're all gonna be pleasantly surprised when the official tour starts in November. The summer festival season is officially over. Now it's time to get down to business.
