i was in and out last night but at one point, when i was in, i turned on the tv to see what was happeneing and i just caught "a good life..." at the very beginning of the song...weird that it was both of us! lol. good timing indeed!!

anyhoo i didn't know what song they were gonna play so when i heard the first few notes of good life i was extremely pleased(understatement). i realize everyone has their favourites but i truely really, REALLY love, that song! the version was nailed and i left the room shortly after smiling & singing to myself a classic hip moment :jump

I thought MIR and "Freshie" the Hip-Hop guy did a great job, show stealers for sure. Gord was at his grizzled best.

Are there any unbiased opinions out there???????
Here is mine. I thought the performance was okay. They played fine gord sang the song as well as he always does, the problem I have is that I have never really heard Gord sing that song well, it's because it is a difficult song to sing more than anything. I think it was a bad choice to do live I guess, Love the album version but never thought they pulled it off well live. I didn't think it was the best performance of the night, I'd have to give that to Daniel Lanois or The Trews, but I didn't see everyone.
I missed Celine darn it.

Good Life was a good choice for a song to play. Looked like Gord didn't want to stop playing. Also looked like he wanted to bust loose with a few patented Gord moves but restrained himself.

Loved it!!! Great version of a great song as someone already mentioned...I had never heard Daniel Lanois before but I thought it was a great song too...there were a few good slide guitarists there last night. I'm anxious to hear how much they actually raised.

lol...nope, sorry, you won't find ANY unbaised opinions here...

i suppose i tend to look at the overall picture and imho those lyrics certainly help overshadow whether it comes out perfect or not, singing-wise. but i guess if you were a current dylan fan you'd probaly know what i mean that song is much bigger than just the way gord happens to sing it.

as far as the rest of the night goes i haven't seen everyone yet. i did see daniel though and i didn't feel it was better than it's a good life...but maybe cause i didn't know that daniel tune...i dunno...

I think the CBC and everyone else involved in this did a real good job for putting it together in 5 days. I thought there were some great performances by bands I'm not really into. Barenaked Ladies sounded great and Bruce Cockburn can really plat guitar. Good Life was amazing. Gord nailed that last "grow". Blue Rodeo was tight as usual. It is always fun to watch Rush live with Neil hammering away and Geddy all over his Bass plus Bubbles helping them out. I was real impressed with Sam Roberts as well.

All that said, what the hell was that Celine Dion production about? That was the only performance I turned away from. After I saw about 60 singers marching on the spot and somebody dancing around a cardboard tree I figured that was enough.

All in all an entertaining night. Can't wait to see what was raised.

I'm in no way knocking the song or the lyrics. The vast magority of people watching that show, wouldn't know that song or its lyrics, and most of those people would think that it was a performance by a band whose singer can't sing very well. I know that is not the case on this site, you all think it is perfect all the time. I am looking at it from a performance aspect of all people watching, not just Hip fans. I think they could have impressed more people if they played a song where Gord can show off his singing chops, which I think he does have most of the time. Sure it was a fundraiser for a great cause but they still have to take it as an opportunity to promote themselves.

I think Good Life was the perfect song to play and a fund raiser is not the place for self-promotion. If they would have sucked I would be honest about it. I thought it was a great performance of a great song. Thats my unbiased opinion.

It's not my favorite song for sure, but it did fit the occasion. I would guess that the band members really love that song as it gets more tv time than any of their other "hits". Paul's voice sounded coolwith no crowd noise washing it out. Did Gord actually play his guitar? It's become his security blanket.
