Michael Richard's Tirade
#46

The show, for me , just is not the same. This story really took off and it will no doubt afftect the sales.

I don't think it will have an effect on sales. Remember these are episodes of a television series from 1995-96, it's not like it's something "new" Michael Richards has done for his career. Sure, they'll be some who boycot but I know die-hard Seinfeld fans like myself won't NOT be going to the store to pick this up. And die-hard fans are the ones who indeed buy the DVDs.

I saw the video and I am inclined to think that he was trying to single out the hecklers in an edgy yet comedic way, but it crossed the line from funny to racist and offensive.

What he said was horrible, but having seen the apology, I don't think he meant what he was saying. Seems like he just went way too far.

white people aren't allowed to be racists, or make what others my percieve as racist comments, but minorities are...

and that's what's truly fucked up about it IMO...

if Chris Rock was on stage, and these two jackasses heckled him, and he said, "man shut da fuck up, if this was 50 years ago, i woulda done everything i could to help the KKK hang you stupid ass niggaz! no wonder the white man was hangin' black folks, there are some STUPID ASS NIGGAZ OUT THERE! GODDAMN", or something to that effect, the crowd would've laughed, because people laugh no matter what he says, and nobody would've cared...

This is an interseting thread. Being white I don't think I can understand or appreciate what racism is. When a white person starts dropping N bombs it is wrong, it carries years and years of despicable history with it. For Richards to use this as a comeback to hecklers is disgraceful, no matter what they may have said to him first. My two cents.

Exactly.

Whether it's ok for minorities to make racial slurs or not (and I don't think it is ok for that to happen either) is besides the point. What he was doing was opening up old wounds that have never healed. There was nothing comedic about it, rather a man who cracked under whatever pressures were going on in his life at the time and unleashed on some unsuspecting and undeserving audience members.

He claims he's not racist...I dunno, that wreaks of ingrained racism to me.

I do think he was trying to be "edgy" but definitely stepped over the line. I feel a bit sorry for him, but I definitely think he desreves the repercussions he is getting right now.

It all comes down to bias on stuff like this, as other people have stated, its only okay for people to joke about others in the same "group". The comment TDK made above about Chris Rock is something I can hear him say word for word and the entire audience would have been laughing their heads off.

Handicap people can make jokes about handicap people (just look at this past season of last comic standing. Do you think anybody of any race could have gotten up in front of a crowd and made jokes about cerebral palsy??) African Americans can make jokes about African Americans. Latinos' can make fun of Latinos and so on

I for one am short with a very large penis, therefore I am entitled to make fun of other short people with very large penises (or is it penii??)...........

One thing we can all agree on, everyone can make fun of Newfies.............they are so funny

Who cares if he's racist? That doesn't effect my life in any way, shape, or manner. When you guys were watching Seinfeld, did you think about the personal lives of the actors? Does it matter? The show is one of the funniest shows ever. Michael Richards didn't kill anyone. He's not OJ Simpson. He showed that he possibly is a little racist. Why does that bother so many people? He's not a rapist. He doesn't beat women.

I'm not just saying this to be controversial, but do you guys actually believe his remarks hurt the black community? This isn't 1952 anymore. Oprah is black and she is one of the most powerful people in the world. Lebron James and Shaq are making about 100,000 mill a year. I don't see the black race as being held down and oppressed anymore in general.A huge reason Obama is getting support to run for President has to do with the fact that he's black. Sure, there is still racism but for the most part African Americans are given every chance to succeed in this day and age, even more chance in some cases what with Affirmative Action and all. These black coalitions and Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, etc. are just ITCHING at the chance to get some publicity and to fight for the "cause". These people are no more "hurt" than the guy that was just called a "dork" by his best friend in jest. Why weren't there groups of white activists calling for the condemnation of OJ supporters? They were all racists, given the fact that the one and only reason they supported OJ was because he was black. Now, they are going to sue Michael Richards? So now, every time a racist comment is made, are people going to hire a lawyer and sue? I'll stop this rant now. I'm sure people will call me a racist. I really am not too worried. I am against racism of any race but a guy doesn't deserve the death penalty for calling somebody a bad word. I know what I believe and I truly believe this comment by Richards wasn't that big of a deal.

You are pretty naive if you honestly believe this. I mean you can't seriously believe that the average black kid has the same chance to succeed as the average white kid.

If you really do believe this, I recommend you read The Blind Side by Michael Lewis. It's a football book with a lot of different themes, but one of the overriding themes is the pure luck that is required for a typical black athlete to make it as a professional athlete. And I'm not talking about luck in terms of being noticed by scouts.....I'm talking about luck in terms of having parents who encourage you to do your best, rather than parents who are crack addicts.

Furthermore, my 5 year old niece has a black father and a white mother, and without getting into too much detail, I've seen first hand the kind of racism that still exists today.

Cferneyh, I haven't read that book. My statement was based on my gut feeling that African Americans aren't held back as much today. Now, you could very well be correct. I will never know for sure because I don't tend to believe much of what anyone on television says or even what authors have to say. I'm sure some of these people are genuine but I can't tell for sure which are sincere and which people are just trying to make a buck. I'd have to be God to observe communities all over North America and the rest of the world for that matter. One thing I'm very firm on is that I don't believe that almost every black person sent to the jail is a victim. I've seen so many African Americans on television saying that it's an outrage with the amount of blacks in prison. They seem to imply that most of them are innocent and the ones who aren't innocent had NO CHOICE. A lot of these criminals do have a choice I believe.

Anyway, I'm not educated enough on the subject and I don't know if ANYONE is truly educated on the subject enough to speak or write about the problem with conviction. I feel for the black children in poverty and with broken homes. The "victims" of the racist tirade at the comedy club had every right to get angry at Richards but I don't like the reaction of the black community. They are just taking an opportunity to get publicity.

With regards to athletics, don't you think it is more irresponsible for parents, white, black or purple, to encourage their kids to try and become professional athletes? In my opinion, alot of the effort made to make into the professional leagues is based on blind chance that a scout will notice the hard work and dedication of the athlete. And that's just to get in the door; there are no guarantees that the athlete will be successful. The problem from my point of view is black kids from the urban community seem to think that their best shot of making money is becoming a professional football or basketball player and don't pay enough attention to academics. When I was in college in Wisconsin, I did tutoring for the nearby high school in history and english and I was constantly amazed how dismissive the black males were of education. They didnt think they needed too much education, just enough to get by because they had basketball as their breadwinning option.
