#46

Thanks buddy! Go listen to some more Fiona CRAPple!
For the good of this world, I dearly hope she never puts out a live album, unless I'm about to take a nice long nap.

considering you've never seen a concert of hers....and her live stuff that's around is spine chillingly great...but i guess she doesn't "pour sugar" on anybody or claim that we should "rock rock 'til we drop", but lyrics like that only come around once in a lifetime

Dept of Objective Measurement

Re: Def Leppard/Pearl Jam, relative merits of

To whom it may concern:

We have carefully measured the relative merits of subject bands and have determined that Pearl Jam is 27 cm superior to Def Leppard.

We originally intended to compare the merits of said bands based on such recognized criteria as Lyrical Inanity, Hairspray Consumption and Ineffable Goofiness, but we decided that all these methods were too subjective, and furthermore, tilted in Pearl Jam's favour.

We had previously determined that the only true measure of musical merit is the size of the ticket-sales penis (see http://hipbase.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=98794#98794). However, we felt that attempting to measure this directly might lead to certain misunderstandings, particularly when dealing with persons known to wear hairspray and spandex.

We therefore devised the Wonderdog Band Merit Index. In this case, we used the Aggregate Band Merit Index, rather than the average, because both bands have five members. (See ticket-sales penis, repulsive aspects of.)

The Band Merit Index is based on the principle that the overall size of body parts is related: a boy with big feet might be presumed to have large hands, and, er, etcetera. We determined, therefore, that the best way to measure the size of each band's ticket-sales penis was to measure the total length of their forearms.

Unused or discarded body parts were not included in the calculation.

I'd rather not go to a concert hearing some boring, emotionally disgruntled woman cry "oh sailor, why'd you do it, what'd you do that for?" over and over again or a very sloppy, 90's grunge band sing "Don't call me daughter." Those are such brilliant lyrics also, aren't they?

ok..this has to stop..how anybody could think def leppard are better lyricists than pearl jam or even fiona is beyond me...i'm done..i'll see things clearer once you're in my rear view mirror

This all started with me saying that Def Leppard is a better band than PJ and Tool. And since I never said that Def Leppard are better lyricists than Pearl Jam or Fiona, I think you should take some more time reading posts than typing up "pointless" rhymes. Oh wait!! Was that rhyme from a Pearl Jam song? If so, it's brilliant, just brilliant!

Please please please
No more melodies
They lack impact, they're petty
They've been made up already
Please please please
No more maladies
I'm so tired of crying
You'd think I was a siren
But me and everybody's on the sad same team
And you can hear our sad brain screaming

Such brilliant, happy, joyous lyrics by Ms. Apple. Doesnt' it just make you wanna get up and dance?
I prefer not to be exposed to a women's depressing, hopeless diary.

My personal favorite...

Do you wanna get rocked?
Let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked

I'm your average ordinary everyday kid
Happy to do nothin', in fact that's what I did
I got a million ways to make my day
But daddy don't agree
Cause when I try to get away
He says he got plans for me
"Get your butt right out of bed"
Stop buggin' me
"Get up and move your sleepy head"
Don't shake my tree
He said "Mow the lawn" - who me?
"Walk the dog" - not my style, man
"Take out the trash" - no way
"Tidy your room" - c'mon get real
Sorry dad, gotta disappear
Let's get the rock out of here

Seven day weekend, up all night
In at the deep end, hang on tight
It won't take a minute, it won't take long
So get on in it, come on, come on, come on

Let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked
Let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked
Let's go all the way
Get it night'n'day
Come on, let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked

I'm your average ordinary everyday dude
Drivin' with my baby to get her in the mood
She's dialin' through my radio
And I'm ready to make my move
But what she got ain't rock'n'roll
And it really blew my groove
It was Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven
It makes me wanna scream
Bach, Tschaikovsky, violins
Turn it off, that ain't my scene
Well I'm sorry girl here's my confession
I suppose a rock's out of the question

Seven day weekend, up all night
In at the deep end, hang on tight
It won't take a minute, it won't take long
So get on in it, come on, come on, come on

Let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked
Let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked
Let's go all the way
Get it night'n'day
Come on, let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked

All I wanna do is take a ride into the blue
Every time I want to love you
I get stuck inside my room
Heaven knows I'm sick 'n' tired of dancin' with this broom

I feel lucky today
Hey look at that, man
Do you wanna get rocked?
Do you wanna get rocked?

It won't take you a minute
It won't take that long
So get on, get with it
Oh, come on everybody

Let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked
Get on top baby
Let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked
Do you wanna, do you wanna?
Let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked
Get on top of it
Let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked
Love to rock your body baby
Let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked

Let's go all the way
Let's do it night'n'day
Let's get out and play
Rock the night away
Come on, let's get, let's get, let's get, let's get rocked
Do you wanna get rocked?

LOL! I remember absolutely hating that song when it came out, mostly due to the god-awful lyrics. Did a 10-year old write those??

lilbones Wrote:All you need to know about this list are three placings...

1. Led Zepplin
53. The Clash
89. The Kinks

Credibility is lost as soon as the Clash aren't in the top-10.

And Zepplin at the top. With a 93 for innovation!

(I disagree)

The innovation was the skill they showed in ripping off the classic blues musicians

Though you might not agree with the focus and scope of the judgement categories, perhaps you gents should read the entire prologue to the list before you second-guess:

"Innovation: (100 points max) The ability to define a genre or a sound or a technique, or to strongly influence bands that came after you, make up the parameters for the fully-weighted innovation category."

"Songs and Songwriting: (100 points max) Songwriting is key to the legacy of any band. In addition to songwriting, judges were encouraged to judge a band on how they interpreted songs in performance. The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s version of “All Along the Watchtower” or Van Halen’s “You Really Got Me” reflect the respective band’s ability to remake a great song, written by someone else, as their own."

They don't call Led Zeppelin "The Grandfathers of Heavy Metal" for nothing. If you guys don't realize that Zep and their adaptation of American blues forms into music arranged for fully-orchestrated modern electric rock and roll sound was, and still is, one of the most and influential in the history of popular music, then you need to brush-up. Couple that with Jimmy Page's unorthodox methods in creating, modifying, and recording sound (like using bizarre tunings and a library of chords, turning speaker cones backwards inside their cabinets for a muting effect, devising the ingenius "backwards echo" technique long before the luxury of digital technology, recording drums in stairwells and positioning mics on various landings, and using creative instumentation features and techniques like mandolins, hurdy-gurdys and cello bows on a Les Paul) and you do, in fact, have an incredibly innovative band.

That said, we shouldn't take much stock in these rankings, as they still rely on criteria that is largely subjective.

Though, in my opinion, they did get at least one thing right, and that's duely crediting Led Zeppelin as the greatest....because, well....they just are (based on the judgements and criteria completely and comprehensively detailed in my head).
