I hate the album version of Courage. However, live, it sends shivers up my spine everytime I hear Gord go high on "it couldn't come at a worse time!"

Well, it's nice to see I'm not alone on that one. I think Courage puts on display the weakest aspects of the band's songwriting, what Carl Wilson of the Grope and Flail called "directionless chord changes to a beat." It goes on and on without ever getting anywhere, and the lyric falls just short of redeeming it.

Courage on CD sucks, all right. I'll never know how that got to be rated a 'classic'...must be the easy-to-remember chorus and the no duh two-chord riff. But live, it's OK. Don't see what Downie likes in it, though.
Count me among the 'Another Midnight' haters. Bad undergraduate poety, thy name is that song.
'Thomson Girl!' Come on, fess up, that's classic Canadiana, snowed-in lovers sung about in a song recorded in a kitchen! Tabernac.

Is it cool to hate Courage or something?? I have heard more people say negative things about Courage than positive things about the song. It's not their best work but c'mon. It's a staple Hip tune. The lyrics do mean something. It's simple but so what. It's not like most of the songs in the Hip's catalogue are revolutionary, technical music pieces (don't know if that made sense but oh well)
 Waiting for obligatory negativity towards NOIS and Blow at High Dough.

I love this thread because it is so intresting to hear other people's opinions on this. It is cool how songs become important to us. I hate "The Rules", but I might be one of those people who liked it, had I gotten a blowjob to it when it came out, LOL.
I love PP, but there are two songs on it that I can't stand. You know one already, and the other is Bobcaygeon. I remember being dumbfounded when it came out as a single. I couldn't believe they picked it.
Another 8 for my list would include:
Another Midnight
Emergency
Titanic
700ft (I never, ever liked this song)
Flamenco
Courage (album version is so castrated)
We'll go too
I'm gonna leave a spot for a track from M@W. I just got the whole album, finally, and there are a few weird ones on there. We'll have to see which one I love the least, LOL.
edit: I forgot Leave. As of today there are two or three from M@W that I think are unlistenable. I now know why lot's of people say it was their worst album. I also listened to The Rules last night, and I think one of the problems with it was where it was on the album. It should have been much later on the record, it isn't that bad.
It was actually very hard to pick ten.

I don't know if I can pick 10, but here goes:
1 - As I wind down the pines
2 - Wild Mountain Honey
3 - Uh..... Crap! I can't think of any more.
Yeah, there's only a select few that I skip over when the iPod is on shuffle and it's usually because I'm in the mood for faster, more upbeat music.
But I think "Throwing Off Glass" is a beautiful tune and it's getting pooped on all over this forum.
The album version of Courage (and all of Fully Completely) is "over produced", but that's the album that MADE a lot of hip-heads and you still find it in heavy rotation in jukeboxes (in WNY anyway).
Go figure.

I will admit, that it is sometimes hard to make a list like this because songs may come and go from this sort of list. Cetrain songs, like Courage, may make the list because they may seem 'overplayed'. Others maybe just never get a proper listening. It would vary. Of the songs I listed, only 700ft, Flamenco, Leave and a few off M@W really bug me. The rest have had there time and place. The one version of Bobcay I have live is really beautiful. I just was really annoyed it was a single when I thought there were some rockin' tunes that got ignored off PP.
And to anyone who lists "She Didn't Know", get the Roxy disk and you'll change your vote.

This topic is valid. The Hip are my all time faves. Some of the songs I love are listed on other's hate lists. But this is now as relevant as ever as Das Hips themselves have asked us our opinions as to our faves. Let's see how many votes our least faves get on their poll (not many, I'd guess)
When The Weight Comes Down - One too many jangles in a jangly song.
We'll Go Too - middle track muddles up otherwise perfect record
Titanic Terrarium - slow+sans melody=dud
Coconut Cream - not a lot there
700 ft. Ceiling - doesn't rock like the hip's earlier uptempo tunes
Membership - it straight up PLODS. Capable of muddying up a live show that otherwise rolls along too.
The Bastard - It seems that the more rockin' tunes on the Hip's last three records have the least melody
Freak Turbulence - see above
Leave - I really like it when the Hip experiment. But not this time.
A Beautiful Thing - Unlike their accoustic slow tunes (which I love), this jangly bebopper lacks any real staying power.
Y'know, it was actually a lot easier finding ten songs I don't really like than it was finding only ten that I do.

I'm so new to the Hip my opinion might not be valid... I've barely heard the half of their work! ( albeit trying to remedy that situation)
On the other hand, maybe it is because i haven't had time to feel get sick of anything because it's 'overplayed'
but anyway... from the mouths of babes ( so to speak )...
Courage ( album version, damnit, I need to see them live! )
My Music at Work - I find it irritating
At the Hundredth Meridian - see previous comment
Fifty Mission Cap ( god I feel like I'm commiting harracy, but its just too.... cheesie... maybe the drums? )
Vaccination Scar... well, I like chord progressions and idea, but not the performing of it on the album... so I dunno
-Katie
There are a lot of songs I didn't like till I saw bootleg performings and then I got it...
but yes... please don't kill me, I know some of these are signature tunes

Hi Katie. Welcome to Hipbase. Good call on 50MC. I love the tune, but you are bang-on with the drum comment. Many here (myself included) believe Fully Completely was over-produced. At times Johnny's drums sound like he is banging on garbage cans.
