Ahh yeah, right I realize that what I said has nothing to do with NASA. The whole point was that the money would be better put to use elsewhere. That is why I brought up the fact that the US is asking other countries for financial help in order to rebuild Iraq. Don't ask other countries for financial help if you have money to use towards something that is not necessary.

Yes I realize it's your money! Spend it the way you damn well please but NOT when you can't support other causes that are more important regardless of what it is for. Yes it's your money, here's the point with the example of Iraq. Spend the money you plan to use on Mars and take it and use it towards rebuilding Iraq. Your Country is asking other Countries for money in order to rebuild. So let me get this you have money to spend on what sending, or trying to send humans to mars but not to take care of a problem you started. Please tell me that makes sense. You could also take some of that money and fix the ghastly amount of potholes that are all over your highways. Iraq is just an example. Are you not understanding the point that you have problems that need to be taken care of and the money that would be used to go to Mars is just not a good choice right now??? That's all I am saying. Also thank god I am not paying for the pictures you like to mention so much, to me they are incredibly boring and uninteresting. Wow my god, look at the rocks and the red sand Wow I can hardly believe my eyes.

Excuse me? Do we really need to start attacking people on a personal level?
I always considered Hipbase to be a forum in which people, regardless of their nationality, culture, religion, sex, race etc. could meet and enjoy exchanging information on a wide variety of topics. This doesn't imply people always have to agree with one another, I'm sure everybody can appreciate a good debate every so often.
It's dissapointing to see that some people have chosen to stoop to personal attacks, insulting fellow hipbasers in the process.

ap·a·thet·ic adj.
Feeling or showing a lack of interest or concern; indifferent.
Feeling or showing little or no emotion; unresponsive.
I stand behind my statement that anyone who doesn't wonder what Mars looks like, and doesn't care about learning if other life exists in the universe, is intellectually apathetic. It doesn't mean that you're stupid, it just means you don't care. You admitted as much yourself. It isn't a personal attack, it's an observation.
I merely said that I no longer wish to argue the merits of the space program with a person who admits they don't care about such things.

this is a joke. i'm with DB on this one.
dont come on hipbase and call anyone "intellectually apathetic" or any other adjective because those kind of attacks are not welcome.

Hopefuly I haven't offended anyone with any of my posts. I do not intend any of them as a personal attack on anyone. I'm just expressing my opinions on the matter. I fully understand the points that those who are opposed to the program in here are making. I would hope that they can understand mine.
Name calling and personal attacks aside, I still believe that space exploration is not wasted money. I will agree with Mark in that Bush's timing has a lot to do with the upcoming election. Of course he's going to try and bolster his image and get his name associated with positive images and popular ideas. That's the nature of a politician. Agree or not with Bush's politics but the Space program still is a useful tool for the good of humanity.
Anyone with access to a Calgary Herald today (it may be in other canwest papers as well) should check out the comment section at the back of the first section. There's a good article in there by Robert R. Stewart called "Why spend on space?". He brings up a lot of interesting points. I can't find a link to it on the net but if I do I'll post it here.

Jumping back in here, I agree with Sherpa that space exploration is a worthy endevour; what kinda ticks me off is the assumption by the other European governments is the right to moralize and judge our decisions when you yourself know that Saddam and other threats are out there. Our position is simple; we shouldn't wait for a threat to our security or regional security to become a grave, immediate danger. The evidence is there that Saddam may not have possessed actual WMD, but he had the know how, the scientists to build it and the desire to once everybody stopped paying attention to him. I compare it to a gangster who doesnt like you, wants to commit harm but doesnt have the means yet to commit it. Does it make sense to wait around till he gets weapons and comes after you or ambushes you? Clearly, it doesnt. The other thing that gets me is other nations complaining we dont spend enough on their problems or problems like AIDS in africa, etc. This last budget spent somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 billion dollars on African Aids programs. The US spends around 350 billion dollars a year on foreign aid to european and 3rd world nations. The problem I have with the UN and other european nations is they want the money but they dont think there should be any kind of controls or guidelines in place to make sure the money is well spent. For example, the US spends 250 million dollars a year for the UN general organization fund, to fund its operations; this fund is so mismanaged they have no clue where 80 percent of the money goes to, on what it is spent. i'd rather see the UN straighten up its act, get some financial controls in place before giving another dime to them. The other thing that makes me question Europe's sanity is the EU is thinking about re-starting arm sales to China. They had a ban in place after Tianamen Square and now they think its a good idea to sell arms to them? To a country that routinely threatens Taiwan with "grave consequences" if they even think about declaring independence? Of course, if they do, it'll just be like the first Gulf War, when France and Italy were facing fighter jets( Mirages) and tanks that they had sold to Saddam back in the 80's.
