Maynard??? Cornell?? Have they been mentioned? Didn't see 'em there.

Ahh, but what about "The #1 Blues singer in the country"?

Jon Spencer takes the prize.

Pretty bold statement, I don't think so. There are a lot better blues singers than Jon Spencer. I like him but not nearly close to the best. He is a good front man but not the best singer.

I'm amazed that no one mentioned Bruce earlier. Even now, at 57, his energy is nearly unmatched.

I can't think of anyone else who I would mention who hasn't already been listed. How are we defining best? In terms of performance, charisma, intelligibility, quality of show, etc?

Well, as it turns out, the claim that he's "the #1 blues singer in the country" is made by Jon Spencer himself (Check out the song "Flava" with Beck and Mike D.). And such "bold statements" are part of what makes his front man act so fun to watch. And throw in a theremin? I mean, come on...

I thought the thread was about best front man/woman/person , not necessarily best singer.

Bono is a self-righteous baffoon who coincidentally helps the world when he has an album coming out. He's a good singer, but he's no entertainer.

Exactly, your statement said "# 1 blues SINGER in the country"- which he most certainly isn't. He is a great front man. Hence my comment about him not being a great singer. He is an elvis impersonator at best. At least he used to be, I haven't checked out his latest stuff.

I guess you haven't seen U2 live. BONO is an amazing frontman.

It is statements as such that make me question what constitutes "the best". Jam bands vs. Rock bands... Two totally different styles of performance, which, in my opinion, can't really be compared. To quote the ever brilliant Chuck Klosterman, "that's like comparing apples and the early works of Raymond Carver".
