What I'm trying to say is, without trading players in the off-season to accomodate the cap, they are looking to add to the current roster(Montreal).
Unlike the deal they made for Kovalev 2 years ago, a Bertuzzi or whomever deal would be completely different. I guess I'm talking about what I think the Habs plans are, and you seem to be talknig about how the league is approaching the deadline.

Vancouver gets Mika Noronen from Buffalo for a second round pick.
Vancouver gets Sean Brown from the Devils.
Vancouver also gets D Keith Carney from Anaheim for a 2nd round draft pick and D Brett Skinner.
Jeff Friesen and Chris O'Donnell are Ducks.
The Carolina Hurricanes acquire F Mark Recchi from the Pittsburgh Penguins for D Niklas Nordgren, F Krys Kolanos, and a 2nd round pick in 2007.
The Phoenix Coyotes get D Jamie Rivers from the Detroit Red Wings for a 7th round draft pick in 2006.
Sandis Ozolinsh, fresh out of rehab, is off to New York. A third round pick is on it's way to Anaheim.
The Nashville Predators acquire D Brendan Witt from the Washington Capitals for Chris Beech and a first round pick.

Pittsburgh trades D Cory Cross to Detroit for a fourth round pick in 2007.
Boston trades F Sergei Samsonov to Edmonton for F Marty Reasoner, a 2nd round pick, and Yan Stastny.
Ottawa trades F Brendan Bochenski and a 2nd round pick to Chicago for F Tyler Arnason.
San Jose trades F Nicholas Dimitrakos to Philadelphia for a 3rd round pick.
Chicago trades F Jim Dowd to Colorado for a 4th round pick.
Minnesota trades D Willie Mitchell and a 2nd round pick to the Dallas Stars for D Shawn Belle and D Martin Skoula.
New York Islanders trade F Oleg Kvasha to Phoenix for a third round pick.
St. Louis trades D Eric Weinrich to Vancouver for a 3rd round draft pick and a prospect.
Vancouver trades F Steve McCarthy to Atlanta for a 2007 conditional draft pick.
Phoenix trades Jamie Lundmark to Calgary for a draft pick.

So in summary,
Vancouver filled the holes in their lineup caused by injury,
Edmonton got considerably better,
Calgary showed some confidence in their lineup,
Ottawa tinkered around a little and picked up a backup for Emery,
Montreal rocked the boat and (I think) clinched themselves a playoff spot,
Toronto, on the other hand, got an old guy who won't make a difference, and a young guy who won't make a difference, in exchange for two players who won't make a difference....
And while JFJ was on the phone, I think he booked tee-off times for Mats Sundin and Bryan McCabe.

i gotta say i like what the nucks did today...this will be the last kick at the can with the core guys i think, and i believe Nonis did a great job in filling in our needs..

not an overly blockbuster day...which is kind of disappointing, I was expecting a few more major moves.
but as an Oiler bleeding-heart, I am so happy with the moves Lowe made. It just added to our endless depth. with a few more goals and stops. exactly what we need.

Yeah, Nonis did a great job of addressing the team's needs while not giving up much at all. I love it when GMs actually try to improve their team - sends a message to the rest of the guys that the team is serious about winning.
Meanwhile, JFJ sat at home and counted his money.
