Wedding Song
#31

Stephen Dame Wrote:What is the real opinion of marriage among the elders and experienced 'round here?

I know the stereo-types and the myths, but the pluses must outweigh the negatives, especially when kids are involved.

Even though it seems corny, and goes against the grain of most of my friends: I can't wait to get married. Something about the familiarity, dependability and shared experience appeals to me.

It can't be as bad as it's made out to be, can it?

Not at all! I suppose it's not for everyone, but I love it! I've been married for almost 2 years. Even before that, we lived together for probably about 5 years. I can't imagine not being with my wife. During our school days, we used to have to spend several months apart during the summer. It was horrible. We wouldn't last that long apart anymore. We've also got a 9 month old. Thatt's even more increadible! My son is in my thoughts all of the time.

I can't explain it very well, but I do highly recommend the married life and parenthood. Maybe we should start a marriage/parenthood appreciation thread?

We just got married on the weekend and I picked a quote from Gift Shop to end my speech.

"The beautiful lull, the dangerous tug
We get to feel small from high up above
And after a glimpse over the top
The rest of the world becomes a gift shop"

Mona, no matter what we come across in our life together, I am confidant we can get a glimpse over the top, and everything else will become a gift shop.

well, being in my late 30's. 38 years old{but i've kissed a girl} i've watched the cycle. three of my best friends went thru ugly divorces and all three ended up living with me till they got things together. so i had to go thru hearing about every detail about what went wrong.
now, i'm in the position the girlfriend is moving in and i feel i've found the perfect girl but i keep having the flashbacks to my friends saying the same thing and look what happened to them. but then again to quote the greatest band of them all "its better to lose at love then to never love at all." thats right POISON. i'm looking for my hairspray and spandex as we speak. but seriously.......i'll tell you more in two years.

People have ruined marriage but still hold it in high regard. It's painted so pretty 'choosing one person to spend the rest of your life with'... Whereas very few actually last. (I suppose there's a cool statistic somewhere)

I've read quite a bit of occult and religious materials, and from my point of view, its as though marriage is just another one of patriarchal monotheisms' enforcement on our society. It's right up there with Christmas/Easter and swearing on the bible in a court of law.

Don't get me wrong; I could choose one woman to spend the rest of my life with. But I don't need churches, 300$ dresses, and friggin documentation to prove it. In this day and age, nothing is binding, not even someone's word. But mine still holds strong...

P.S. Can you tell I'm a Pagan? I'd rather worship the Great Mother than believe a religion that made my god Pan out to be the bad guy...

That is exactly how we felt!
So we had a summer weeding in a beautiful back yard with close friends and family. No big expensive dress etc.
We did not need to get married, we both decided that it was the next step in our relationship. This is number 2 for both of us, so we did not go into this lightly.

Indecently, 10 years ago when I got married, I should have listened to the bad omens. To top them off, I had tickets to the hip at the Commodore here in Vancouver, and had to give them up because of a wedding commitment. This time the Hip played 1 week before my wedding and my finance and I went and had a great time. Wink

Cheers...

I always thought Ahead by a Century would be good, even the released version.

"Illusions of someday, casting a golden light. No dress rehersal, this is our life."

"That's when the hornet stung me, and I had a feverish dream, filled with revenge and doubt. Tonight we smoke them out"

Then there's the bootleg version off of High Sierra

"First we'll climb a tree, and maybe then we'll talk. I will touch your hair, you can touch my...socks. Then we'll be married, then we'll standing right. No dress rehersal, this is our life."

First of all, good to hear you say "Poison" gibby... admitting you have a problem is the first step to curing it. Smile

But you hit on what scares the hell out of me.

It seems far too comon today that people get married, have expectations that are WAY too high, and then when the honeymoon is over (More figuratively than literally...) they seek to "scrap and start over with another" rather than look to reconcile or better the relationship.

At the first sign of trouble, I want to know I've got somebody as commited as I am... and I've heard way too many of the horror stories you mentioned to think that a simple ring means real commitment.... although I think it should.

Ah... if only life were as simple as lov'n on the hood of a pick up truck.

As I'm sure everybody around here knows, the original lyric to 'Ahead by a Century' was 'I can touch your cunt, you can touch my cock.' And in a perverse way that sums up a tremendous amount of what goes on between the sexes, doesn't it?

It always seemed to me that 'Impossibilium' from 'Day for Night' would make an appropriate wedding song, lyrically at least. 'With impossibiulium for a payload we lift the rocket out of the pocket, nothing can stop it...' That captures the essential ambition of marriage for me.

Saving yourself for marriage... it's the new "tatoo." All your friends are doing it... or no, wait: they're not.

But, BuffaloHipFan, I started doing cocaine when I was 6 so I can't really remember anything before that. Although I may have actually been 5, but it could just be that I'm Canadian and you're American; Americans are faster. Us Canadians take a couple years to... uh.... notice... things....

And hey Gibbytime39, I got a white lab coat and one of them glue-on mustaches... you need a disguise if you wanna keep yourself out of trouble...
