Disappointed, but not surprised... setlist wise

But I also enjoy New Orleans Is Sinking.

I'll leave it at that.

I agree with you Sean - I think where it becomes borderline for hardcore fans is when you go to a show and it is filled with Courage, NOIS, Poets, M@W, Bobcaygeon, Fireworks, 50MC, etc - kind of like most Toronto shows bar the past Massey Hall stint. Placed properly in the set they can kick a show into high gear but too many and it feels like too much of the same thing if you've seen 10+ shows.

Somthing tells me that they are playing the songs they are digging.

I mean, it would be an insult to the fans to simply play the songs "they" wanted to hear. If thats the case, you may as well go watch a hip cover band.

I would like to propose the following formula for the next leg (evening with). IMO (which doesnt matter but its fun) this would increase my personal enjoyment level of any given show by 20%....here goes:

Take current set lists from evening with:

- minus 1 song from new album per show
* examples: Last Recluse, Struggle has a Name

+ add one more "rarity" as the first song of every encore
*example encores: (fight, speed river, blow) or (Membership, Frozen in my tracks, Bones) or (38 years old, Honey please, Poets)

+ add one more "album" cut to both sets (bringing the set total to (11 with DP) or (12 without DP).
*examples: (album cuts don't have to be rarities but lesser played things ie.....Something On, Boots or Hearts, Flamenco, Tiger the Lion)

= great show!

Spottrax, I think what you're suggesting would be an awesome and feasible option for the setlists. Not a farfetch'd list of rarities every show and not expecting the band to play 30+ shows per night. And yet I think everyone would be pleased with such a setlist.

How would it be an insult to the fans?

If anything, my only complaint from North Bay was that they didn't play enough of the new stuff, I would've loved to hear LIAF, Speed River, Frozen, Feeling, or Furrows, in place of/in additon to, say...Courage, Bobcaygeon, MM@W. In the end, it was just good to see the hip live again though.

You pay to see the hip and what they have to offer, it's their show, not the audiences. We are just along for the ride.

If they played songs they were sick of or weren't digging at the time it would be telling the audience "well, I don't like these songs, but to please you we will play songs we don't want to play, simply to get a payday".

For me, I want to see an artist do what they want to do, these music is their art, not ours and they owe us nothing.

They owe us nothing? What kind of a relationship is that? I thought the fans paid their bills. Maybe I've got it all wrong.

Very rarely does a band only play what they want without consideration for the people supporting them. Do you really think most bands get a kick out of playing their biggest song(s) for the millionth time? Probably not but they do cause they tend to feel that the majority of the people at their shows would be disappointed if they didn't - and thus less likely to see them the next time. They always balance what they want to play with what they feel will satisfy the majority of the attendees. A rarities show might please 20% of the crowd but 80% would walk away feeling slighted that they didn't play all the hits - or at least enough to keep them engaged during the snow.

I've seen many bands and I've never known one who doesn't try to make the fans happy.

Your original statement of it being an insult to fans is a little ridiculous.

I disagree. Do you think the when the hip make an album they say "gosh, I think the fans would like this"?

Or do you think they produce the ART that they want to produce? These guys are artists, no different then Picasso, they just use a different medium.

I am sure they have songs that they like, and that the fans like and it's a great rush for them to play them and thats great. However, I would hate if the hip were playing songs they HATED just to make the fans happy.

I don't know why you're turning this into an "us & them" type thing. I'm pretty sure me and the Hip have the same taste in music (I do listen to the music they produce, after all). As with most bands, what fans want and the bands play usually align. Not necessarily because the band is 'giving in' but because we're all enjoying the same music, or art as you put it.

And of course they mostly play for the fans anyways, there's no way they love playing NOIS every night, but hey... that's show business.

There is clearly and "us and them"....they are the people who create the art and we are the ones who enjoy it. However imo it's not a negative thing.

I agree with your point about us and them having the same taste in music and thats the way it should be, not the band trying to make music they think the audience will like.
