So it seems the rarities have made their way out of the setlists. Where did "Thugs, The Bear, An Inch an Hour, Tiger the Lion, Dark Canuck, Dire Wolf, Goodnight Josephine" go?

They've been playing a lot of festivals lately, and I've noticed that they tend to stick to a more "greatest hits" style setlist, especially for festivals in Canada. I think the rarities will make their way back into the set during the September theatre tour.

I hope they (rarities) do come back. Otherwise the folks in Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Hamilton will have really gotten screwed.

Do we know if it is still going to be the "Evening with" format? Not only does that format lend itself to the play of rarities, at my old age, it's the best thing to ever happen to live music!

It is an "Evening With ..." format for the rest of the Canadian Leg anyways. Pretty sure about the rest of the tour as well. Since their playing smaller venues, with higher admission prices, and multiple nights, the rarities will be back I'm sure.

Yeah, I'm with ya, Chives.

I think they're sticking with 'An evening with' too. I checked out a couple of shows for the US fall tour and looked at the calendar for the respective theatres, where support acts are almost always listed or at least have a 'with special guests' comment. None of these did of the three that I am thinking about going to see so I'm assuming they are staying with that format.

For the 9:30 Club show it is listed as: "An Evening With The Tragically Hip - Performing two sets"
I would say it is safe to say all the rest of the dates will be the same, especially since none of the remainder of shows are "festival" shows.

The Hip have so many great songs that they haven't touched in a long time. In some ways I think they sell themselves short as a band by playing the "favourites" and leaving some splendid material on the shelf. We all have our favourites that we want to hear again. I would prefer to see them charge more and play longer sets. Most of the diehards would pay and walk away twice as happy. I've heard songs like Little Bones and New Orleans at least 50 times if not more. Sometimes I think it is strictly a business decision on their part. Keep giving the fans a little tease of some old stuff and they will come back for more. Let's face it, one good tune can make a show for a lot of people. It's kind of like golfing, that one awesome shot keeps you coming back for more.
I went to see Springsteen a few months ago. Im not a huge fan, but, I was told I needed to see his live show. To be honest he blew the Hip out of the water. Three hours of straight playing and material from every decade. The tickets were 120, but, it was worth every penny. He even has this thing were fans bring posters with music requests and the band ends up playing the songs throughout the night, even if they havent played the tune in awhile.
Rob Baker used to say how disappointed he was as a music fan growing up when he would see a band perform the same show twice. Well, I think the Hip are guilty of that at this point in their careers.
I think most of us would pay a little extra to hear some of the rarities. Come on Hip do the right thing, just try it. I promise you that your fans will not be disappointed.

Well said...the music changes over time but that is a pretty good mix scattered within the new material. I also believe the set lists will contain more gems once an evening with resumes.

Those two setlists are pretty decent. I guess some of us remember hearing ALL of Up to Hear Live...and so on. I still think a longer setlist would make for a more complete show. I am not the only one who has found their more recent shows to be repetitive. And what would be wrong with a Hip show that focused on B-side material. They have some great stuff that never see's the stage.

I agree. If a band like the Hip are playing a festival, they aren't going to dig deep.

And after a nearly month-long break, they're coming to me, here in Winnipeg. Hoping they bring out those M@W tunes or maybe even dust off some new rarities.

If they are taking a month off doesnt that mean no rehearsal's? Therefore, nothing that we havent heard recently?
