I'm ambivalent toward In View.

In View stinks, and it's not just a song, it's a terrible song. Dare I say it? ... it is worse than ... Evelyn.

I'm still okay with it, always have been. It's really nice when you're in the right mood. The only WC song that's not on my mp3 player is Pretend. I hope that song gets permanently dropped from the live set sooner than later!

In View is The Hips "Miss You". A song you never expected to hear fom them, you don't really like too much, pretty weak when compared to all of their other material, almost too radio friendly, and a song you would rather not hear in concert............but then half way through find yourself singing along...............

Can anyone even stomach listening to this song anymore? I tried to listen to it yesterday and gave up about a minute in. Blech.

Wow, CT. My WC is almost identical, but has LNIDYDLM instead of Drop Off.

In view is a girly song, I never thought the male fans would dig it. I think its a cute song but it only appeals to certain people, you really have to be in a perky, giddy, childlike mood to get into it.

I think the fact that the band had to create a bubblegum pop piece of schlock in order to get more radio airplay speaks to the sad sad state of commercial radio.

Agreed. But i'm more concerned with why the band feels it needs to get radio airplay at this stage of the game.

And I certainly don't understand some people's dislike of Rink. The soaring guitars at the intro and throughout, the dramatic, hockey imagery in the lyrics, the almost Police-like feel to the beat... I think it's one of the best songs on the album.

Couldn't agree more. Rink is easily one of my favorites on the album, and it never fails to kick my ass when they play it live. When I first heard it at Sasquatch '06, my friends and I immediately declared it an instant Hip classic. Robby's Police-esque guitar part is what makes the song, and the dance-rock breakdown during the bridge parts is pretty damn cool too. I especially love Johnny's perfectly timed rim-shots during the 2nd verse.

I hear what you guys are saying, and when I must don my "critic hat", I might even be forced to echo some of your sentiments, but for some reason I just don't enjoy listening to Rink, which is odd. Usually, if I can appreciate the technical aspects and overall construction of a song, I default to enjoying and appreciating said song. But in general, I just don't seem to enjoy this one.

However, I have found that if I focus my attention on Sinclair's bassline, I wind up enjoying the experience because Sinclair is..well....frickin awesome.....

Uhhhh....no. That's a terrible analogy. "Miss You" might be a little out-of-line with what the Stones typically "do", but is nonetheless a bad-ass tune with a groovy bassline. "In View", on the other hand, is complete cheese that made for twelve-year-olds and Nancies.

I never thought of it as a bad ass tune, I just can't get past the disco bass line..............................just my opinion though.......

Disco, by and large, is (or was, circa Some Girls) a very 'adult' scene. The disco beat of "Miss You" is a funky, sexy groove; it's "Saturday Night"; it's "sweaty club"; it's "bump and grind" to something a heckuva lot closer to rock and roll than hip-hop.

"In View" is "hang at the mall", "slumber party", and "let's do each other's makeup after school".

Actually, when I heard it live in Calgary last November, I thought the song was really lacking because there wasn't any "cheesy" synthesizer in it.

As long as the Hip don't perform In View with Justin Timberlake, I can manage it. It's a good song, not a great song. I'm very surprised no one compared the opening of Rink to a Zeppelin-esqe song. "Rock and Roll", or "The Song Remains the Same"....the type of songs that build to a climax...Great drum and guitar work

I would hazard a guess that the record company asked them to create some radio friendly songs so the record would garner more attention and, theoretically, sell more records.

I also don't understand the love for WC itself. To my ears, the lyrics are pretty good but the arrangement sounds like something Liberace or Queen would put together.

That was more or less my reaction. The title track is particularly Queenish.

In View might be a cheesey pop single, but its success is in large part its irony and the way it references and plays with the conventions of the cheesey pop song genre. The video really helped me to think about the song in this regard--it's like a laundry list of references to and plays on pop music video conventions and cliches. I think it's a smart, great song.

But I think World Container is the weakest album in years. In my opinion, the first three tracks are stong. Fly, Luv (Sic), and The Kids Don't Get It are mediocre at best. Pretend and Last Night I Dreamed You Didn't Love Me are among the worst the band has ever recorded. Things pick up again with The Drop Off and Family band, which are both solid tunes. And then there is World Container... This track is such a great indication of the central problem of this album: Its producer. World Container itself is not a bad song at all--as I think is evinced by live performances of it--but the production choices are terrible. A piano and strings? It's like the irony of the lyrics went completely over Bob Rock's head. The music is so earnest and maudlin it makes me uncomfortable. A friend of mine put it best: It sounds like theme music for a Disney movie.

To sum up: I think Bob Rock has got to go--now.

I totally agree with all of you regarding the over the top Queen-like production on the title track, but that's the only track that bothers me. I think Bob did a great job on the rest of the album. Sure, the production has a bit more gloss than previous Hip albums, but I thought he captured the rhythm section perfectly. Johnny's drums have never sounded better and Sinclair is much higher in the mix than usual, which is great, because as Esthete mentioned in his post, Sinclair is freakin' awesome. Like may people here, I was worried about what the album would sound like with Rock behind the boards, but I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the final results.

Having said that, I do hope that World Container was just an experiment and that they choose a different producer for the next record.
