XPLORNET takes the cake for me. I've had troubles with Bell but they far surpass them in stupidity and irresponsibility.
My family and I were in the moving market and had been searching for a new property for months, trying to get out of the city yet keep a decent connection to the net for my business. We found a piece of property, gorgeous, private and close to family and friends, the only problem was getting the net. Now, Xplornet offers satellite internet connections and the area was elligible since there were no other "hi-speed" alternatives.
I talked thoroughly to the seller, buying the property(not cheap, I might add) depended on the connection, if we couldn't receive hi-speed, we wouldn't be buying the property and would keep looking. When it came down to it, we could receive 1MBps. Much slower than I am used to, but more than acceptable to buy the property and it would take care of everything I needed to get done. I got all the information I could about the connection, and the shear facts were I'd average a speed of 750KBps.
Sold. We bought the house, had the dish installed at a price of $1600 and have been paying $89/month. Perfectly acceptable to me if we rec'd what we bought.
Months pass, the connection is nowhere near the speeds stated. I spent months with technical support, trying to troubleshoot and figure out what I was doing wrong. Was it my network? Routers? Computers? Modem? Everything came up to a dead end, I was averaging about 250KBps, not good enough!
I added one call to my string last week, nine months after installing their system. It was now explained to me that they have a "Fair Access Policy" in place that is there to protect users against hi-bandwidth clients(apparently me) on the network against drops in speed. What I have been experiencing are percentage drops in speed. For every 30megs I download per hour, my speed is dropped a certain percentage, accumulating throughout the day. This is something that I had inquired about when purchasing, but had not been informed about.
I'll skip the long boring part about conversation with the company; "a supervisor will call you back" who doesn't, "you can upgrade your service, but we're not allowed to tell you what speeds you'll receive." What a joke!
So as it stands, we purchased our dream property on XPLORNET's word; big mistake. There are no alternatives to their service aside from dial-up and they will not let us out of the contract. How do ya like that?
