if a submarine is sinking then it was probably xxxft under water to start with and there would be no hope of swiming anywhere, you'd pretty much have to wait it out until the sub implodes from pressure.

NOIS is a song about the political relationship between Canada and the U.S., and how much Canada tries to get influenced by the U.S. "Hey North, you're South, so shut your big mouth...."

the song is a bout a dead body...
when New Orleans' water levels rise, old corpses in cemetaries have been known to be washed away...
hence
"my memory is muddy, what's this river that I'm in, New Orleans is sinking man and I don't wanna swim"
Gord is singing from the point of view of a corpse...but the real proof is in the line:
"i had my hands in the river, my feet back up on the banks, I looked up to the lord above and said hey man thanks"...Gord's being sarcastic obviously, and really pissed that as fate would have it, he (a corpse) has washed up on a bank, more proof: "sometimes i feel so good i gotta scream, she said Gordie baby, i know exactly what you mean, she said "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" <--- woman screaming in horror after discovering a corpse...
now, what the corpse may or may not be a metaphor for, i don't know for certain, but I am 100% sure that the song (at least that part of it) is told from the vantage point of a corpse...
do i think they'll play it in NO...I don't think they will, i think INOIB might be more likely...but really, they have such a huge back catalogue of classics, they don't have to play either, and it won't matter if they don't...except to a few casual or newbie fans who haven't heard it live before, that REALLY REALLY want to...

If TTH won't play NOIS in the States because of Katrina it would be a travesty and completely absurd.
It would be much more understandable that they opt not to play in in N.O., because the events following the storm are still fresh in the minds of its citizens, and the city is still recovering.
That said, I don't think any Hip fans in Louisiana would take offense to TTH playing one its most famous & kickass songs.

Sweet thread! I always thought the song was about the city. The submarine and corpse are fantastic ideas. Personally I think , NOIS should be adopted as the city's theme song and played by marching bands as they waltz through the French Quarter. I can't help but think of the name Georgie instead of Gordie. Hey that gives me an idea for the name of the corpse!

When I saw them play it in Calgary, I swear that at the end Gord was saying: "New Orleans is sinking and I don't wanna help". That sort of modification probably wouldn't float in the states, it even made me go "ooo" the first couple of times I heard it.
