i've never had a problem with people downloading music, in this case, with the hip probably being his favourite band, i still don't have a problem with it, as long as he decides to buy it when it's released in the states...

even if he doesn't, i wouldn't consider it a big deal, just a lil disappointing, that's all.

I live in Washington DC, and I bought it off Maple Music online, but who are you to judge??? So, no one's ever given you a burned CD before? The Hip are and always will be my favorite band, and I will always support them. However, I like to hear other stuff too, and if someone burns me a CD, I'm not gonna give them $15 and tell them to donate it to whoever deserves it...it's how music gets shared and how new people find out about new bands.

I burn other music sometimes, but never the Hip's albums....ever ever. You want to listen to their new album so bad, I can respect that. But you don't need to download it off limewire; you go to maplemusic, or itunes, or somewhere where the band can actually get the royalties. This is a Tragically Hip fansite, is it not?? We're here because we love the band, and we support what they do.

it's not any different than the countless cassettes that were made and distributed from the 70's through to the 90's...what's important (in my opinion at least), is that the music is heard and enjoyed by as many people as possible, that's the whole point of making art, to share it with others, in hopes that they'll appreciate it...of course they deserve to be paid for their work, but i'm sure they're doin alright :lol:...

The difference is that now people can share their "favorite album" with millions of people (theoretically, but you get the point) in less time than it used to take to make one cassette copy.

I hope the boys are doin' alright.

Oh, and I pre-ordered WC at Amazon.ca and had it blasting at 11 three days after it was released in Canada.

for those of you calling me anti-hip and a thief, here's the list of what i've spent on them:

1. all of the previous cd's except the EP (i know, start a new thread and excoriate me but i'm not crazy about it and no i don't have a burned copy)

2. the box set, which also had some confusion on the release date, but only by a couple weeks, not six months

3. the songbook ($24 US)

4. three live shows

5. two t-shirts

6. planning on buying re-issues
i've also told countless people about the hip, etc. however, i'm old-school;
i want to walk into a store and buy it. i would buy their other live stuff if they stocked them in stores but i'm not paying for mp3s and i'm not sending off to east jesus, saskatchewan for a friggin cd. :roll:

But as already stated in this thread by various people: the album *IS* commercially available. I'm tellin' ya, all you have to do is order the damn thing online from a Canadian retailer, choose priority shipping and you'll have the actual CD in your hands within 2 freakin' days. It's not that difficult.

Hey -- Troy, NY! If I had read this thread before today, I could have brought you a copy of WC. We spent the weekend in lovely East Greenbush, NY, which is just down Route 4 from you, for American Thanksgiving.

Had our first turducken.

My friend who lives in East Greenbush bought it off Maple Music and had it within 3-4 days of the Canadian release.

Any opinions on buying hip stuff at used record stores? It may seem like a cheapass thing to do, but I did to fill out my discography for them when I started listening to them, but I have paid for a show and the box set, as well as a couple of brand new albums, so I'm about even I think.

I do the same with books and music. In my opinion, it's legitimate because you are paying for it and the person who sold the book or record did so for their own reasons. I'm sure the publishing and record companies would prefer you buy it from them because as Skippy said earlier, back catalogue is a cash cow for them, but I feel the artists and writers don't mind because they've done it themselves.
