I think it is good that they are breaking out of there two year routine. It wouldn't bother me if we didn't see an album until Chritsmas. The fan base has shrunk, they need to make the general fan really get the urge for some new Hip material. A longer break may creat more anticipation from the general public.

Those aren't the ones I was talking about. I know quite a few people who are still mild fans...used to love them back in the Road Apples/Fully days, and now just cling on hoping for the band to recapture that era. Surely you know some people like that. But to be fair, those people don't keep tabs on what the Hip are up to anyways, so they wouldn't know if an album is in the works and if it is delayed or not.

In much the same way that Pink Floyd's little stunt of breaking up in 1984 or so, then reforming the band without its only good songwriter and kicking out two abysmal albums before going dormant for over ten years, then re-forming for one show before announcing that they won't play together again has really, really hurt their popularity ... right?

It amazes me how people can fuss and fret about this stuff. If the band puts out good albums, they will sell. A delay of a few months in putting out an album won't make any difference, except in the number of impatient posts on the Hipbase.

...and is it just me? Or did a box set with a two cd compilation, a bonus feature dvd, and a Concert DVD come out in November? That easily makes up for a late release.

Here's the difference between Bob Rock working with OLP, the Tea Party, and The Tragically Hip.
The Tragically Hip have their own sound already. An identity that doesn't piggyback on others too greatly. yeah, I said it.

I believe Bob is just going to refine what we already know as greatness, and make it more accessible. People who say the "Bob Rock will ruin the Hip" before even hearing it, are obviously close-minded. You just know that Bob will keep the rock in, turn up the hooks, and who knows? Maybe make the band a few new fans. This is nothing but a smart move for the band, in my opinion.
I've had the pleasure of spending this week with Paul Langlois at the Bathouse, and I must say, it sounds like Bob gave them more than just a once over. I remember hanging with Gord, Gordon and Paul in Vancouver when they first started recording with him, and it looked like they had just been put through the ringer. They told me it was breathing new life into the band, which was exciting to hear.
Also, Bob Rock didn't "ruin" Metallica. That is subject to personal taste. He gave Metallica hooks, so they could rise above. If you watch "Some Kind Of Monster", you'll notice that Metallica ruined Metallica much more than Bob Rock ever could. If anything, Bob Rock saved that band.
Basically, when I read about people on a Tragically Hip devout website, slamming the band's choice of who they wish to work with, it kind of saddens me. The Hip know what they are doing, and are pooling all of their resourses to make the best album of their careers. What, I ask you, is wrong with that?

I know Bob Rock can be great, it just appears that a lot of bands use him as a last resort to save their careers, when in truth no one could actually save the bands from their own self demise. I know the Hip are a strong band and that this isn't a "last resort" by any means. I'm not a big OLP fan or anything but they seem to be doing quite well still. But as you said Metallica (who I've never been a fan of) was already destroying themselves, and the Tea Party were in bad shape as well.

I wouldn't care if a toddler or a chimp was behind the control board for the hip, I'd still anticipate the album!

Hmmm, that's interesting to say the least. I felt that the band needed to have some new life after IVL, but I didn't feel that way after IBE (nor after hearing No Threat).

I gotta say I'm still a little nervous of the next CD having an overly polished sound (especially after I enjoyed the "rawness" of IBE so much), but obviously they know a hell of lot more about what is good for them than I do, so I'm certainly willing to give the band the benefit of the doubt.

Of course the DVD was about 8 years too late in coming out.

Exactly! I think everyone will be a heck of a lot less "ancy" in seven days time, when the Hip have the Conservatory and Sasquatch under their belts, and the summer concerts have official started. Also, I was just thinking... this weekend would be a PRIME weekend to have their "Surprise concerts", seriously. The Hip need to shed some rust before their big gigs, and its a long weekend. If I was in Toronto, I would look around at the Horseshoe and ask if they have anyone booked for the weekend.
