Free beer is always the best beer Wink Besides, out of all the crappy mass produced Canadian brands I prefer Canadian hands down, but defintitely not on draught. OV is the best on tap, IMO.

And I love the title of this thread lol

The Horrible Esthete Wrote:somewhat on-topic:

Anyone see the NBC dateline about online sexual predators? They've done three specials on the subject, but that latest one is truly some compelling television.

They worked with law enforcement to set up "stings" where they masquerade online as a 13 year-old boy or girl, and pop the offenders when they show up with the clear intent of "scoring" with a barely-teen.

They just reel in one after the other - and they come from all social classes, professions, races, age groups, etc. - no demographic is spared.

It's quite a travesty to know there are so many freaks who will seek out and prey on our children....

I caught a bit of one episode. They busted a guy who works for the Department of Homeland Security! Confusedhock:

Coneycat Wrote:The thing about the Internet is, cops say it actually makes these freaks easier to catch. It's so much easier to find them online and set up stings.

On the other hand, it also makes child porn much more available than it otherwise would be.

As a result you have more people to catch, i.e. the number of pedophiles committing offences has probably gone up, or to put it another way, the total number of offences being committed by pedophiles will have risen. So the total load on police resources goes up -- and apparently there's a serious burnout problem with the cops who have to deal with this stuff day to day.

Then you have the question of the effect. There's a good body of research on how porn affects perception and behaviour. I don't think it's far-fetched to suggest that wider availability of child porn makes latent pedophiles into active pedophiles.

And that's my daily dose of thinking about things I'd rather not think about....

Indeed they do. My mistake; The newscast I heard this morning on Mix 99.9 said that Molson's was his employer...

The officer speaking on the news last night mentioned that the number of offenders had not, in his opinion, increased. But he might have been trying not to scare people. And I'm sure there's a lot in your comment about the transition from latent to active pedophilia.

Burnout? I can't imagine how anyone would last longer than a day working this area. It just doesn't bear thinking about.

Well, if the number of offenders hasn't increased, the number of offences has -- or at least, the police are always complaining that they can't keep up.

Maybe that's the beer Gord was drinking in "At the Quinte Hotel."

Coneycat Wrote:That made me feel slightly more hopeful, but I still want to run this guy over with a car. Only not my car, because it's a Civic and not nearly big enough to do the damage he deserves.

If you ran him over a few times though, it would do the trick. It would just take a little longer.
