I'd put it at somewhere between Road Apples and Fully Completely, as I think FC is when both Gords went from long shaggy hair to shorter hair
And Peart's a better drummer than just about any carbon-based life form (given that Bonham and Moon no longer qualify for the second half of that), but I'd still prefer to have Johnny on something that needs a good, hard-driving rock beat, rather than a lot of complicated frippery.

I think you're right. It looks like it is from sometime between the live video for Twist My Arm where Downie's hair is really short and say the Kumbaya festival about a year after Fully Completely came out when it was kind of longish again. It's definately a few years after Up To Here though because Sinclair had that huge hair as seen in the Misty Moon video during that era.

Two quick points on these issues...

#1. Concert dvd's are one of the coolest things ever invented (as long as you have a decent entertainment system!). I bet I bought at least 15 of them last year... Great way to clean the house...crank out live "Hip", "Rush", Green Day, "REM....etc.....and away ya go!

#2. Regarding Johnny vs. Neil's drumming abilities. IMO, Peart overplays much of the time. Although he is Mr. Rock drummer and incredibly schooled in his craft, Peart really puts in toooooo much stuff! Johnny, on the other hand, lays the most rock-solid foundation (with Sinclair) for the amazing words, melodies and guitars we all love in the Hip. Maybe I'm the only guy that thinks this but I wish like hell sometimes that Neil Peart would not "hot dog" so much of the time and put less fills and more emphisis on building a solid beat.... Bottom line both guys are terrific drummers for the bands they are in. They both have a role to play and they do it wonderfully!

I bow to your superior ability to recall Sinclair's hair. I got home from work and looked at UTH. What was I thinking? He had a tonne of hair then.

It was the lack of facial hair on Rob Baker that fooled. Except for that period around when "The Darkest One" and "It Can't Be Nashville" videos were shot, I haven't seen his chin since UTH.

#2. Well said. Johnny is PERFECT for the Hip. The Hip are a band with an insistent groove to their music. Johnny is the backbone of the band. I wish Johnny improvised a little more on some Phantom Power songs like 'Membership' and a few others, but all in all he is a great fit for the band. The Hip is known for that drumbeat. They have a consistent, hard driving rhythm to their music. No hotdogging necessary for the most part. You touched on hotdogging and I agree in that I don't care for "drum solos" too much. I've seen the Trews three times and they were great but each show, the band left the stage and the drummer had a drum solo that was so unneccesary it wasn't even funny. I was very unimpressed. I don't want to hear someone prove how great they are at their instrument. I just want to hear great songs. :thumb:

As for the time frame, I'd say it is around 1993 when they shot that "Limelight" video. I wish they would release the full version, either the Hip or Rush.

Is it Peart as in "Peer"-t or "Purr"-t?

When Neil Peart does a drum solo, I don't believe he is trying to prove how great of a drummer he is, I believe he is playing great music.

You may be correct. In general though, I don't see the need for a lot of the drum and guitar solos I've heard from bands, especially the Trews. Don't get me wrong, though. I still love a great guitar solo. I love the guitar solo in "November Rain" by GNR, love the guitar solo in "Bring it All Back" from Road Apples, love the guitar in "Cortez the Killer" and "Cinnamon Girl" by Neil Young. I DO NOT like most of the 80's guitar solos from the likes of Eddie Van Halen, etc...

Sorry to quote such a big thing. But as for the Trews. i saw them for the first time and i was soooooo happy to see the drummer and guitar soloing and taking center stage. I am there to hear all the music. And there base player is pretty damn good to, to bad there was no solo from him. Im sick of just the singers being in the front.

Though, i do agree with the silly 80s rock star solo, some of they just took it too far and with out taste. They all wanted to be Jimmy Page. But i did love Angus Young just pwning the croud playing on his back flying in from the roof on a UFO, bobby his head and never looking up. THAT ROCKS!

But this being a Hip forum, id have to say that Rob Baker doenst really do the whole lighting solo thing. His soloing i find is more like he is playing rythm and it just fits so well in the song, and not above the song.
