I was at the Jays game last night at the ROGERS centre, and when they had the ROGERS sportsnet update and showed that Bertuzzi was getting reinstated, everybody cheered. I find that a bit disgusting.

I was at the 'nucks last home game of the 03/04 season where they gave out their jerseys after the game. When Bertuzzi came out in street clothes the place erupted in cheers like he's just pulled a pregnant woman out of a burning house. I couldn't believe it. Vancouver fans are just weird. I guess cheering for Trevor Linden year after year will do that to you.

Opiated, I agree with everything you've said. This is just typical over-reaction to an ugly incident. How many times in the NHL have guys punched each other WITH GLOVES ON from behind? It happens DAMN NEAR EVERY FEW GAMES!!!! It was just unfortunate for Moore that he got injured the way he did but that's hockey. What about Domi hitting Niedermeyer in the playoffs? Wasn't that just as bad? What about Suter on Karyia? Domi on Ulf Samuelson? Claude Lemieux on Neely? Marchment on Modano and countless others? What about Mark Messier spearing a guy as hard as he could? He got 3 freaking games!!!!! What about Bobby Clarke breaking Kharlamov's ankle in the summit series? Wasn't that worse?

Steve Moore is probably able to play. He's a scrub who nobody wants anyway. He went out of his way to hit Naslund and had to expect some kind of response. I agree that Bertuzzi is a moron and idiot. Brookbank should have just went on the ice, grabbed Moore and punched him in the face whether he wanted to fight or not. Bertuzzi could have suckered Moore face to face. Why wasn't Worell on the ice with Moore? When did Moore break his neck? You can't prove that Bertuzzi broke his neck? What if it was caused by the Avs player who jumped on Bertuzzi's back?

I'll tell you all you need to know about Moore and his support from the players. The Avalance signed Brad May. That shows how much the Avs think of Moore and support him.

Injuries happen in hockey. People should lighten up. If this same thing was done by other players, fans would be saying the same thing. If Iggy or Pronger or Hossa or Sundin did the same thing, fans of those teams would think the penalty was enough.

I really can't believe you wrote some of this: Tell Steve Moore that breaking a vertebra is better than breaking his neck; and yeah, the fact that other players fell on top of "bert" to prevent him from throttling Moore really makes Bertuzzi's actions more redeemable; Suter smashing Kariya's face in or anybody else doing anything else to anybody else is completely irrelevant -- and obviously is so to the NHL, or else they woulda McSorely'd Bertuzzi's ass and he'd be playing in the ECHL.

Someone else above wrote that Bertuzzi has done great things in his career and plays with heart. I neither agree nor disagree. I think that is completely besides the point. The point is he cheapshotted a guy and put him out of the game. He was handed a long term suspension that became essentially a meaningless joke when the league took a year hiatus. If Bertuzzi's gonna learn anything from this and if other would-be cheapshotters are gonna learn anything from this it should be that you can't pull this crap and then get off lightly on a technicality (as in, technically, he sat out an entire season).

The incident was pretty cheap, Moore's play on Naslund was not penalized, nor on the replays did it look like it should've been. He then fought Cooke, done deal. Bert took it too far, and for a guy as "tough" as everyone claims he is, he could've waited to fight him rather than attempting to take his head off....give him another 20 games I say, or at least hold a press conference to answer questions to maybe attempt to justify why he should be allowed back, instead of hiding behind Gretzky's press conference and hoping no one noticed.

And if you want to compare it to the Mcsorley "incident", he was charged with assault and never played in the NHL again(sure, he was about done anyways" but...if you look at the footage, Mcsorley didn't attempt to take Brashear's head off, merely get his attention. Had Brash had his helmet done up properly, he would've been able to get up and pummel Marty, instead of bottling up his rage and taking it out on some poor security guard at his apartment later on.

I think this is well-reasoned. I'm not contending to have Bertuzzi thrown out for ever, but another 20 games or so into this season would put, I think, a legitimate end to the whole incident.

It is interesting that the pro-Bertuzzi crowd seems to forget that this wasn't the first time he'd been suspended. In the '01/02 season he was suspended 10 games for leaving the bench during a fight.

The guy is a hothead, plain and simple. If he didn't learn his lesson in '01/02 I fail to see how he's learned his lesson this time around.
