Wow. What a rush! I was invited to tag a long with TTH for Live8 and it was pretty incredible.

Backsatge, we were camped out in the courtyard of a motel like complex. This was the dressing room area for a bunch of bands. In our area, the notables were Neil Young, Motley Crue and Jet. It was a really laid back environment, kids playing pingPong, everybody hanging and talking with family and friends - who would go and check out various acts as they preformed - crews scurried about doing their thing, the music exec. types milled and the bands and performers waited to preform.

We get the 15 minute call then at five minutes or so, we walked over as a group with the handlers, security, friends and family. It was very relaxed. Up the ramp, up the stairs at the back of stage right. We congregate a little bit. Gord D. gets wired in and Billy Ray has got the instruments lined up onstage. I take a few pictures as the band talks amonst them selves, then I move upstage right near the front of the stage, so I can see TTH as they walk onstage.

Onstage there seem to be people everywhere. The tv guys alone, I think there were four cameras plus a cable puller for each, plus tech people for the currnet band last, the band, the next band, the venue, photographers, lights etc. There is a lot going on.

Because the set was so short, I couldn't risk getting to the front of the stage, or I might miss half the set . . . or worse and so I decided to stay on stage.

The sun was blinding the only time I went to stage left, so I pretty much parked myself on stage right and was rewarded when I got a shot of the full band looking to the wings and then on a seperate occasion during Poets, when Dan A. turned to me and another guy shooting pictures, did a little didy with his feet while soloing on his harmonica and then turned back to the audience.

My non-musical Backstage high light for me:

When Gord D. and Curtis "CUJO" Joseph met. I was right there, and Gord goes to CUJO, "You know, I'm a goalie myself. . . ." When I quizzed Gord on his comment to CUJO later in the day, he replied, "It's something he had to know," with a big grin on his face.

About the sound. To me, when I was at the venue, it sounded great. I heard it on the radio twice last night on my drive home and it sounded fantastic. I did hear that there were some issue during parts of M@W on TV but that it got corrected and sounded fine afterwards.

So here are some previews of what I shot. I'll be posting more shots on the hip site soon, including some wallpaper sized images.



This is on the way to the media room where all the bands got their pictures taken and were asked to sign a bunch of things. Volunteers.were collecting signatures of band members on shirts to give away.






Next was a shoot for the Global campaign.



Then came the Question and Answer.

question: The one picture you've captioned gord collecting his thoughts. Do you know if he writes or picks his rants out ahead of time?

As to when, where and how Gord comes up with his rants . . . your guess is as good as mine. I'm hoping to get the chance to ask him some questions in the future about these kinds of things, so feel free to pass them along to me.

When I took that picture, I went up to talk to him and he said something great - which I can't remember. I went back and got my video camera, asked him the same question, something like: "What are you writing?" and he gave me a completely different, wisecrack answer. The moral I learned is to have my video camera running when I ask him the first time or I have missed my chance. I left him to do his thing then.

You will have to excuse me if I tell you things that you already know. If I don't know something, there's a good chance somebody else won't know either - let's enjoy the ride and we'll all learn and share together. If there's something you are interested in definately let me know. I'll make a form for these kind's of things to better keep track of them as well.

What I don't know, is the REASON that Gord S. always does this. . .

In terms of the click ad . . . I don't know for sure if that's what it is for, but he's snapping his fingers . . . . and I took my pictures while they were taking theirs. When Gord left, I followed, but I think they were getting one person from each band to do it etc. It was in this tent big with all the light blacked out, a few big flashes and back lighting, and about 10 photographers, assistants and video cameras. And then me.

Gord looked directly at me winked and then looked back at the other camera.
