That was me, and it was The Concert for Harmony in Aspen in August 98. It was a 2 day event with bands that played before them (Greyboy Allstars are the only one I can remember) and then the Hip followed by the Black Crowes. The second day featured Big Head Todd & The Monsters followed by the Black Crowes.
It was an amazing show that was set in a natural amphitheatre at the base of Buttermilk mountain. I drove from Saskatoon to see it and it was such a treat to experience the Hip outside of Canada. I was front row for most of the Hip, and I had all kinds of room to dance around and do my thing. It was also great to see the Hip win the largely inexperienced crowd over by the end of the first song...Grace Too.
That show ranks right up there with my all time favorite Hip shows.
Cool! I actually used to live in Colorado (Littleton to be exact), and my family used to go skiing at Buttermilk all the time. It's a beautiful area. I love it when the boys tour the U.S. in the summertime, because they always end up playing all these little outdoor festivals like the one you attended. I remember seeing the Hip at the High Sierra Festival just north of San Francisco in '98, and it was very similar to the show you described. Beautiful outdoor setting, great weather, and a small crowd allowing for plenty of dancin' room up front. And the band always ends up winning over the crowd by the 2nd or 3rd song. I recall one guy standing beside us at the San Fran show leaning over and saying "holy shit, these guys rock!"
